Scripts - Episode 3179

THE SURF CLUB

DANI and HAYLEY are outside.

DANI

Hey Hayley. Got your costume for tonight?

HAYLEY

Oh, em. No. I’m sort of, I’m still working on it.

DANI

You’re leaving it a bit late.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well I just haven’t got round to doing it you know.

DANI

Is this about Noah? You guys aren’t still fighting? I mean you’re going right?

HAYLEY

Let me see. That would be yes, yes and no.

DANI

Who’re you going with?

HAYLEY

To tell you the truth I don’t even know if I am going to go.

DANI

Hayley, you can’t not go. This is your last year.

HAYLEY

Yeah, I suppose.

DANI

Look, don’t worry about it, I mean you can come with me. We can be the dateless and desperate gang or dateless anyway. Oh, come on, it will be awesome.

HAYLEY

Yeah, OK unless I get some big time grovelling of Noah and then next hour or so you’re on.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

JUDE, NOAH and FLYNN sit at a table.

FLYNN

So, yeah, the list is pretty short because Sal’s not going to sing.

NOAH

What can we do?

FLYNN

Man, at short notice there’s no time to rehearse anything.

NOAH

Still got to put on a good show.

JUDE

Yeah, I realised we’re playing for you mates this time bro, but you know it’s really short notice. We’ll just have to bring some CD’s along and pat it out a bit. Anyway I reckon it’s the least of your worries. You should concentrate on how you’re going to tell Hayley you’re not going to be with her tonight.

NOAH

I’m not telling her anything. You know she’s not interested anyway.

JUDE

Yeah, but if you believe that, you’ll believe anything. Fine, I’m not saying a word. Better do a sound check. You coming?

FLYNN
Yes.

JUDE and FLYNN stand up. CARLY and SALLY walk in.

SALLY

Em, actually I don’t really feel like anything. I might head home.

CARLY

Sal that is the second time you’ve tried to avoid that guy. Want to tell what’s going on?

SALLY

Not here Carly. Come on, lets just go.

CARLY and SALLY leave.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

There is people carrying things about. JUDE and FLYNN are there.

FLYNN

Man, it’s your birthday. Can’t pretend it’s not happening.

JUDE

Ah, I just don’t want to make a big deal of it all right.

FLYNN

Well I’m not suggesting we rent out the opera house. Just a few quiet drinks your place after the formal. That’s it.

JUDE

All right, maybe, I’ll see.

FLYNN

Birthdays are a deliberate excuse for your friends to let their hair down without feeling guilty or even the sacred responsibility.

JUDE

I’ll think about it.

JUDE leaves. ASHLEY walks in.

FLYNN

Hey Ash.

ASHLEY

Oh, hi.

FLYNN

Hey, have you got a sec?

ASHLEY

Em, not really. Kind of busy at the moment.

FLYNN

OK, I just wanted to ask you, how did it go with dad?

ASHLEY

Em, pretty good actually. Yeah, em, he wants me to go back home with him.

FLYNN

Right. And.

ASHLEY

And I’m considering it. I mean I think that he really wants to help me.

FLYNN

OK.

ASHLEY

You don’t think it’s a good idea do you?

FLYNN

Hey, it’s not my call. I just don’t want to see you slide back into the same old patterns. You know the stuff that got you in trouble.

ASHLEY

Look, you know that’s not going to happen. I’m not going to get involved in that stuff again, OK.

FLYNN

OK.

SALLY’S HOUSE

CARLY and SALLY sit at the table.

CARLY

Yeah, well I can see why you’re trying to avoid him Sal.

SALLY

Carly.

CARLY

So according to you he’s the nicest guy you’ve ever met. He has a social conscience, he is everything you’ve ever wanted in a man and he obviously adores you, so yeah, why would you want to have anything to do with him?

SALLY

It’s not funny.

CARLY

Well Sal, it’s not funny, it’s just absolutely ridiculous. I mean you can’t have kids so you broke up with him. I mean, what am I hearing here Sal? You’re not a real woman if you can’t have children, is that what you’re trying to say? I mean, have you even asked him how he feels about all this?

SALLY

Course he’s going to say that it doesn’t matter. What else can he say? But it does matter. Flynn deserves to have children. He’s going to make a great dad.

CARLY

So you were planning on having children?

SALLY

No, but.

CARLY

Well have you asked him if he even wants them?

SALLY

It’s not the point.

CARLY

I don’t know Sal. I still think you’re jumping the gun a bit really. Anyway there are other options. What about adoption or fostering?

SALLY

It’s not the same.

CARLY

Aw, well, gee thanks Sal. I’m really glad Tom and Pippa didn’t think like that.

SALLY

No, I didn’t mean it that way.

CARLY

Yeah, well I hope not. You know I remember not so long ago, you were the one that said families didn’t get any realer than what we were.

SALLY

Yeah and I meant that. I still do.

CARLY

Well, well then.

SALLY

You know that and I know that because we’ve lived it. I can’t expect everybody else to feel the same way.

CARLY

Well, maybe not, but I just think you need to give him the benefit of the doubt. Just let him decide for himself, ay.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ALEX is there. MILES and BRODIE walk in.

MILES

Alex.

ALEX

Hey-hey, Miles. I got told you were coming to town. How are you?

MILES

Yeah, good man. I couldn’t miss Brodie’s formal.

ALEX

No, it’s going to be a good night.

LEAH walks up to them.

LEAH

Hey, Milo. What are you doing here?

MILES

What’re you doing here, more like it? You’re due in a couple of weeks.

LEAH

Ah, will you stop fussing OK. Poulos woman always work to the last minute. Yeah, why didn’t you tell me that he was coming? I would have got a room ready.

MILES

Ah, no. I’m staying in the caravan park this time.

LEAH

Oh.

MILES

Well you know, it was a last minute decision to come at all and well I didn’t want to put you out with the baby due.

LEAH

No, yeah, yeah, sure. Yeah, OK.

LEAH leaves.

SALLY’S HOUSE

HAYLEY is at the door. SALLY answers it.

SALLY

Ah, Hayley, you must be here for the pants. Gypsy went shopping with Will so she left them out for you.

HAYLEY

Aw, thanks.

CARLY walks in.

SALLY

Em, did you meet my sister Carly when she was over here last year? She was here for the wedding.

HAYLEY

Ah, yeah, sort of, but not really.

SALLY

Hayley was one of our ancient history students. She’s just finished the HSE.

CARLY

Oh, well I’m bet you’re glad that’s ancient history.

HAYLEY

Yeah, ah, Gypsy’s lending me these for the formal tonight. We’re supposed to go as a movie character.

CARLY

Em, Sandy from Grease, right?

HAYLEY

Ah, a bit obvious.

CARLY

No, you’ll be perfect.

HAYLEY

Aw thanks. Gypsy said you aren’t going.

SALLY

Em, yeah, no I’m not.

HAYLEY

Aw Sal, some of the kids will be going off on holiday straight after the formal and I know some really want to say goodbye and thank you for everything.

SALLY

I think everybody would probably rather just concentrate on having a good night tonight. I’m sure we’ll catch up sometime.

HAYLEY

Well I hope so. Anyway I better get going and get ready. Nice meeting you.

CARLY

Yeah, you too.

HAYLEY

See you.

SALLY

See you Hayley.

HAYLEY leaves and SALLY shuts the door.

SALLY

What?

CARLY

Sal, you know very well what. You’re going to stay in here for the rest of your life, are you? I mean really, would it hurt that much just to go down there and let these kids say goodbye to you?

SALLY

Yes. You heard what Hayley said. They’re all getting dressed up. Look at me. I look like I’ve been dragged through a bush backwards.

CARLY

Excuse me here. This is me we’re talking about Sal. Come on, give me half an hour. Well forty-five minutes tops. Come on, you’ve got to face the world sometime. What do you say? Let’s do it in style.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ALEX and LEAH are there.

LEAH

Be with you in a sec.

ALEX

No hurry.

LEAH

Oh no, no. Wouldn’t want to hold you up. I know you’ve got much more better things to do with your time than stay here with your sister of course.

LEAH walks into the kitchen. There is the sound of smashing plates. ALEX goes through.

LEAH

Oh.

ALEX

Relax.

LEAH

I can’t believe.

ALEX

All right, relax. Just relax. Come here. Don’t worry. Let go.

LEAH

No, no, no, no. Leave me alone.

VINNIE walks in.

ALEX

What’s wrong with you?

VINNIE

Hey, hey, hey, what’s going on here?

ALEX

I’m taking over. That’s what going on. No, I don’t want you back until the baby’s born OK. From tomorrow morning after the formal this is my kitchen.

LEAH

Is that right?

ALEX

Yes it is.

VINNIE

Yes it is.

LEAH starts crying.

LEAH

Fine, breaking all my dishes, breaking everything, you win all right. Just don’t mess it up.

VINNIE

Thanks mate.

ALEX

No, no thanks buddy. There is a condition. I want the car for tonight’s formal OK. You’ve got to travel in style, you know what I mean?

VINNIE

You’ve got it.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BRODIE and DANI are in front of the mirror.

BRODIE

Are you going to do something with your hair?

DANI

Yeah, yeah, I’m going put it up like this.

BRODIE

Oh, with your little tiara.

ASHLEY walks down the stairs.

BRODIE

Aw, I can’t see anything.

DANI

There.

BRODIE

Don’t be ridiculous.

DANI

It’s there. I’m not.

BRODIE

Can you see a pimple?

SALLY’S HOUSE

CARLY holds up some clothes and she shows them to SALLY.

SALLY
I don’t think so.

THE BEACH HOUSE

HAYLEY walks down the stairs and looks at a picture of her and NOAH.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

ASHLEY, BRODIE and DANI mess around with each others hair and then try to stamp on each others feet.

SALLY’S HOUSE

CARLY shows SALLY two wigs.

CARLY

Come on, put it on.

SALLY puts the wig on.

CARLY

It is, it look so good.

SALLY

Can I put it on, can I put it on. No way.

THE BEACH HOUSE

HAYLEY puts eyeliner on, then stops and looks in the mirror.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

ALEX and MILES stand outside the door.

ALEX

You look pretty good, for a Roman.

MILES

You scrubbed up all right yourself.

DANI opens the door.

ALEX

Hey.

DANI

Hello.

MILES and ALEX walk in.

DANI

I’ll just go and tell them you here.

ALEX

OK.

DANI goes through to the hall where BRODIE and ASHLEY are.

DANI

They’re here.

BRODIE

Go, go, go, you look fantastic.

DANI

Yes.

ASHLEY walks through.

ALEX

Wo, ho, look at you.

ASHLEY

Well I’m supposed to be Marilyn Monroe.

ALEX

Yeah, I can tell.

BRODIE and DANI are in the hall.

BRODIE

I just want to tell you I might not be coming home tonight.

They hug.

SALLY’S HOUSE

SALLY and CARLY are there.

SALLY

I can’t believe I let you talk me into this.

CARLY

Well you couldn’t refuse me the chance to dress you up. It’s been a long time since I got to play big sister.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

DANI, ALEX, ASHLEY, MILES and BRODIE are there.

DANI

Ah, we better get going guys.

ALEX

Ah, hang on, the Camara’s out the front. We don’t need to walk.

DANI

Well, we have to pick up Hayley so is there room?

ALEX

No, five’s the limit.

MILES

Well I don’t mind walking.

BRODIE

Fine by me.

They kiss. There’s a knock at the door.

DANI

Probably someone wanting a van.

DANI answers it. It is JOHN.

DANI

Hi Mr. Saunders. Ah, come in.

JOHN

Good, I was hoping I would catch you before you left. Ashley, you look lovely.

ASHLEY

Thanks.

JOHN

You’ll knock them dead.

ASHLEY

I doubt it.

JOHN

Well you can tell me all about it over breakfast, eh. I was hoping that, eh, these would go with your dress.

He brings out some earrings.

ASHLEY

These were mums.

JOHN

Yeah. She’d want you to wear them.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

The school has been decked in fairy lights. JUDE, NOAH and FLYNN are on the stage.

NOAH

Ah, men in black. How easy is that?

JUDE

Ah man, it’s the Blues Brothers.

FLYNN

The hats.

JUDE

Belushi, Ackroyd, ah.

FLYNN

So we’re going to do a couple of sets, then take a break because they going to give out this competition stuff.

NOAH

Oh, we’ll just put a CD on.

JUDE

Yeah, they’re going to be ready for some slow, quiet music by then anyway.

SALLY and CARLY walk in.

SALLY

This is silly. We’re like the oldest people here.

CARLY

Oh, no we’re not. Flathead’s here. I mean Fisher, sorry.

SALLY

You are going to be bored out of your brain.

JUDE, FLYNN and NOAH get ready with the music.

NOAH

Hey, I might go talk to Sal before we get started, eh.

FLYNN

Em right, we’ve got a few minutes.

NOAH walks over to SALLY and CARLY.

NOAH

Sal.

SALLY

Hey, Noah.

NOAH

Em, I’m going to be up there with the band tonight. I just want to say thanks for all your help this year in case I don’t get a chance later on.

SALLY

Thanks Noah.

NOAH

No, thank you. Everybody reckons that you’re the best teacher that we’ve had this year.

HAYLEY and DANI walk in.

NOAH

Anyway, I better get back to it.

NOAH leaves.

DANI

So you went as Sandy and he went as Danny and you guys didn’t co-ordinate.

HAYLEY

No, we didn’t.

DANI

Great minds.

HAYLEY

No, it just means that neither of us have any imagination.

DANI

Stop fighting it Hayley.

BRODIE and MILES come in and walk up to SALLY and CARLY

BRODIE

Miss Fletcher.

SALLY

Oh, hi Brodie.

BRODIE

I want you to meet Miles.

SALLY

Miles, I’ve heard a lot about you.

MILES

Yeah, Brodie’s told me a lot about you to. She said if it wasn’t you she wouldn’t have been able to stay at school.

SALLY

Well I think that’s a little bit of an exaggeration.

BRODIE

It’s true. If you hadn’t stuck up for me I never would have passed year ten. Have a good night.

BRODIE and MILES walk away.

CARLY

Mmm, so still think no ones interested in talking to you tonight.

ALEX and ASHLEY are outside.

ALEX

Well you’re not going to get much dancing done out here.

ASHLEY

Look, I shouldn’t be here. It’s not even my school.

ALEX

It’s not my school either. If you don’t come in, I’m going to look pretty silly standing around like an idle don’t you think.

ASHLEY

OK. Here goes nothing.

ASHLEY and ALEX walk in. JUDE, FLYNN and NOAH play music on the stage. DON, SALLY and CARLY stand in the hall.

DON

Well it’s good to see you out and about Sally. There was a rumour that you might not be coming.

SALLY

Oh, well, seeing as I missed the last few weeks of school I thought I should make the effort and come along and say goodbye to some of the year twelve’s.

DON

Well, I’m glad you did. It must seem like only yesterday since your own formal Carly.

CARLY

Well actually I was just thinking about how long ago it was. It’s hard to believe I was ever that young.

DANI, BRODIE and ASHLEY hang around together. MILES and ALEX stand together.

MILES

Well, I guess you better get out there and show them how it’s really done, eh.

ALEX

Yep.

MILES

You’re still dirty at me about Brodie, aren’t you?

ALEX

Miles, me and Brodie are over OK.

MILES

Good, because I’m really serious about her. You know that, don’t you?

ALEX

Really. I thought you flew all the way back here for a joke, you know that.

NOAH, FLYNN and JUDE are on the stage. DANI walks up to SALLY.

DANI

Hi Miss Fletcher.

SALLY

Hey. You and Brodie have done a really good job organising this.

DANI

I hope so.

SALLY

Miles seems really nice.

BRODIE and MILES dance.

DANI

Yeah, yeah, he’s a great guy. I’ve never seen her this happy.

ALEX dances with ASHLEY. He watches BRODIE and MILES kiss. The band stops playing and the crowd cheers. DANI walks up to HAYLEY.

DANI

How’s it going?

HAYLEY

How do you think? He hasn’t spoken to me all evening.

DANI

Have you spoken to him?

HAYLEY

I shouldn’t have to. He’s the one acting like a jerk.

NOAH

This next song. It’s the first time I’ve played it. Hope you like it. Wrote for a special girl. She knows who she is.

The band starts to play. NOAH starts to sing.

NOAH

I don’t know why I feel the way that I do. Can’t give the reasons that I know that it’s true. I just want to be with you, want to be with you. Why don’t we take each day one step at a time? As long as we’re together it’ll work out just fine. You’re the part of my life, I can’t do without.  Because I just want to be with you, want to be with you. Why don’t we take each day one step at a time? As long as we’re together it’ll work out just fine.

DANI and BRODIE are on the stage.

DANI

And the award for the best impression of Mr. Fisher goes to Mr. Fisher.

The crowd claps.

DANI

Sorry. The best supporting role in the canteen goes to. Drum roll please.

BRODIE stamps her feet.

DANI

Envelope opening. Eh, John Burke.

The crowd cheers. CARLY and SALLY are in the hall.

CARLY

So you are actually expecting me to believe you used to sing with that band?

SALLY

Yes.

CARLY

Well they’re actually really quite good.

SALLY

Oh, thanks a lot.

CARLY

You know what I meant. It just doesn’t seem to be your style that’s all.

SALLY

This isn’t going to work you know.

CARLY

What?

SALLY

You’re not going to get me up there.

CARLY

Fine.

DANI

And the next award is for the cutest couple.

BRODIE takes a card out an envelope.

DANI

Surprise, surprise. Noah Lawson and Hayley Smith.

The crowd cheers and HAYLEY and NOAH go onto the stage.

DANI

Maybe you guys should kiss and make up.

HAYLEY and NOAH kiss and the crowd cheers.

DANI

Congratulations, you really deserve that.

FLYNN and ASHLEY are in the crowd.

FLYNN

You having a good time?

DANI thanks everybody in the background.

ASHLEY

Yeah, I am, although the bands been a bit.

ASHLEY screws her face up.

FLYNN

Is that right?

ASHLEY

No, I’m just joking. You guys have been great. I’m still trying to get used to the idea my big brother is actually kind of cool.

DANI

Well that’s it from us and the band so we’re just going to put on some CD’s now.

VINNIE

We want more.

CARLY

Yeah, I want more.

The crowd cheers as JUDE, NOAH and FLYNN go on stage.

NOAH

Em, OK. We’ve still got a couple of songs left, but we’re down a lead singer so we’ll try do our best.

DANI

Sally.

The crowd shout SALLY’S name. SALLY then goes up on stage and the crowd cheers. The band starts to play and then SALLY starts to sing.

SALLY

Be careful what you dream for, you just might get it. Be careful what you pray for, you might regret it. You get your hands on the glittering prize, now everybody’s coming at you from every side. Be careful what you pray for, you just might get it.

Later people are leaving. HAYLEY and NOAH kiss.

NOAH

I missed that.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well you’ll just have to stop acting like an idiot though, next time.

NOAH

Come on.

HAYLEY

Yeah, OK, it was a bit my fault.

NOAH

A bit. Yeah right.

HAYLEY

Hey, do you want to come back to my place? I’ve got something to show you that’s all.

NOAH

It sounds good to me.

HAYLEY

Come on.

MILES and BRODIE kiss. DANI walks up to ALEX.

DANI

Stop watching them and dance with another Nigel.

ALEX

You could never be a Nigel, Dani.

DANI

And neither could you. So would you stop acting like one?

ALEX

OK.

THE BEACH HOUSE

NOAH and HAYLEY are there. HAYLEY holds her painting of her and NOAH.

HAYLEY

So what do you think?

NOAH

Well I can see that it’s you and me.

HAYLEY

You hate it.

NOAH

No, I really like it.

HAYLEY

It’s the first time I’ve done an abstract.

NOAH

Yeah, that’s what I meant by being us.

HAYLEY

Explain.

NOAH

Well, we’re a bit abstract to. You know things can get a little bit blurred and you can’t work out what’s going on, but in the end everything works out fine.

HAYLEY

I’ll have to think about that one.

NOAH

Can you think and kiss at the same time?

HAYLEY

I can try.

NOAH

OK.

HAYLEY and NOAH kiss.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

DANI and ASHLEY walk out. They walk into ALEX.

DANI

Hey Alex, we’re off.

ALEX

Oh, hang on. I thought I was driving you home.

ASHLEY

Aw, no. It’s such a lovely night. I want to walk.

DANI

Yeah, me too. We’re going to check out the beach party. You want to come.

ALEX

Ah, no thanks, I’ll pass.

DANI

Are you sure? There’s going to be a bonfire.

ALEX

No, I’m sure.

DANI

Ok, we’re going head.

ALEX

Yeah, me too.

BRODIE and MILES come out kissing.

DANI

Hey, what about Brod.

ALEX

Great, I’m stuck with them.

DANI

I don’t think they’d mind if you went without them.

VINNIE comes out.

VINNIE

Throw a bucket of water over these two please. Some of us have got homes to go to.

ALEX

Come on guys, the Camara awaits, let’s go.

A ROAD

MILES, ALEX and BRODIE are all in the Camara.

ALEX

Would you guys give it a rest for five minutes?

MILES

Aw, come on man. We have the farts. You can’t have everything. I mean you’ve got the car.

BRODIE

Excuse me.

MILES

No, no, no, this is serious. Our thing with the car goes way back. When Chris first got it we were so jealous and now Alex’s.

ALEX

No, now on Leah’s. I mean, I only got it for a night. How good is this sound system?

ALEX turns up the music.

MILES

Ah, yeah, it’s pity about your taste in music though.

BRODIE

Alex, turn it down. I can’t here myself think.

The car hits a pothole. ALEX loses control.

BRODIE

Alex.

There is the sound of crunching metal.
