Scripts - Episode 3134

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

MILES and ALEX sit at a table.

MILES

I’m so sorry man. I didn’t realise she was your ex.

ALEX

Don’t worry about it man. It’s no big deal. Just took me a bit by surprise, that’s all.

MILES

I told you I was going out with the girl from the caravan park.

ALEX

No, Miles, correction. You said you were going out with the gorgeous girl from the caravan park.

MILES

She is gorgeous.

ALEX

You obviously haven’t seen Dani Sutherland.

VINNIE

Woah, there cowboy.

ALEX

What?

VINNIE

Don’t be cruel.

ALEX

Vinnie, I’m saying as it is.

VINNIE

Hey, show the little woman, some r, e, s, p, e, c, t. She deserves better and you know it.

ALEX

Yeah, right.

VINNIE

Anyway I’m with him, not that I’ve got eyes for anyone, but the princess. I think Brodie is A-grade top choice.

MILES

Absolutely.

ALEX

Yeah, well don’t let me stop you. She’s all yours.

MILES

Are you sure?

ALEX

Absolutely. Me and Brodie are old news.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

KIRSTY walks in. JADE is sitting on the couch. RHYS is in the kitchen.

KIRSTY

Who, check out what J-Lo’s wearing in this one. Any tighter and you think it would be painted on. Woah, I think it is painted on.

RHYS

Hello, don’t hear the happy murmurs of study coming from there.

KIRSTY

Yes, we are dad.

RHYS

Well, I could do with some help up here if you’re short of something to do.

KIRSTY

Hey, space cadet, are you all right?

JADE

Ah, yeah. Yeah, just a bit tired.

KIRSTY

Jade you’ve been off with the fairies for ages, what’s up?

JADE

Take one guess.

KIRSTY

Nick.

JADE

He still hasn’t called. He’s been back a whole two days.

DANI walks in.

JADE

No postcard while he was away. No phone call. No nothing. It’s like he;s forgotten all about me.

KIRSTY

Well Jade, you didn’t even go and see him when he left either. It’s not like you gave him the hints you were interested.

DANI

You are better off without him Jade. The whole family is bad news, trust me.

BRODIE walks in.

RHYS

That was the shortest date in history.

BRODIE

I don’t want to talk about it.

DANI

You can’t just leave us hanging.

KIRSTY

Yeah, what happened?

BRODIE

Alex and Miles are friends.

JADE

You’re kidding.

BRODIE

No, they’re like best buddies.

KIRSTY

No way.

BRODIE

Yes way.

DANI

Hey, well so what? Alex is yesterday. It’s not like he’s been particularly sensitive to your needs since you broke, but if he can get on with that magazine bimbo, then I reckon you’re within your rights to do whatever you want to do.

BRODIE

Yeah, but as if Miles would be interested. I mean, mates, ex-girlfriends are just off limits. I mean, it’s the golden rule, isn’t?

DANI

Yeah. It kinds of depends on who you are.

BRODIE

If he’s friends with Alex then he’s probably no better than him anyway. I’m going to get changed. What a waste.

THE BEACH HOUSE

WILL and IRENE walk in.

WILL

Yeah, I’m stuffed. I didn’t get a wink of sleep the whole way back.

IRENE

Mmm, bit on your mind, eh.

WILL

Yeah, you could say that.

IRENE

Well, it’s good to have you back doll.

WILL

Yeah, let’s hope everyone else thinks so. So, have you spoken to anyone?

IRENE

Ah, if you mean Dani, no, although I did hear she’s been working your job on the boat, with Alf.

WILL

Really.

IRENE

Yeah, just while you’ve been away. Apparently she’s taught him a thing or two about woman’s lip.

WILL

I bet she has.

IRENE

Ah, cuppa.

WILL

Yeah.

IRENE

So, how is it with the Swiss mob?

WILL

Yeah, good. I mean, it was good to see them and all, but Ed’s doing it pretty tough.

IRENE

Poor kid.

WILL

I mean, it sort of puts things into perspective. I mean, Peta and Ed just take it day by day and leave life style choices.

IRENE

Have you decided what you’re going to do?

WILL

Right now, sleep. Sorry, I’m tired. I’ll probably speak to Dani first thing tomorrow.

IRENE

What about Gypsy?

WILL

After that. I’ll take care of things when I’m little less jet-lagged.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

MILES and RHYS walk in.

RHYS

Yeah, she’s here. Just don’t know if she’s up to seeing anyone.

BRODIE walks in.

BRODIE

Hello.

RHYS

Leave you to it.

BRODIE

What are you doing here?

MILES

Well, as far as I know we’re supposed to be on a date.

BRODIE

What about Alex?

MILES

What about Alex?

BRODIE

Well, it make things kind of complicated.

MILES

Nah, he said he’s cool. Anyway, he’ll just need to learn to deal with it, won’t he? We might still have time to check out a movie.

BRODIE

OK, I’ll have to get changed.

MILES

What for? You look great.

BRODIE

OK, I’ll just grab my bag.

DANI walks in.

BRODIE

Oh, Dani, this is Miles.

DANI

Oh, hi.

MILES

Hi. Do you mind seeing something with subtitles?

BRODIE

No. We’re going to go see a film.

DANI

Ah, right.

BRODIE

Shall we go?

MILES

You bet. Oh, eh, nice to meet you.

MILES and BRODIE leave.

DANI

Yeah, you too.

THE BEACH HOUSE

NICK sets the table. WILL comes out of the table.

NICK

Pizza?

WILL

My little brother offering me pizza. This will be a first.

NICK

You look like you could use some.

WILL

Thanks, but I’ll probably just stick to salad.

NICK

You going to go see Dani tomorrow?

WILL

Well I can’t really put it off much longer.

NICK sits down.

WILL

Not that that’s what I was doing. Don’t worry. I’ll make more sense when I’ve finally had some sleep.

NICK

Guess you’re a bit stressed, eh.

WILL and NICK walk through to the kitchen.

WILL

Give it a rest.

NICK

So what do you think is going to happen.

WILL

Don’t know until I talk to Dani and Gypsy. Go on, you may as well tell me? What have they been saying about me over at the Sutherland’s?

NICK

I don’t know, honest. I mean, I haven’t been game enough to go near the place.

WILL

I don’t believe this. It doesn’t feel like it’s my life, you know what I mean?

NICK and WILL sit on the couch.

NICK

I can’t believe that there’s going to be a little rugrat running around calling you dad.

WILL

Don’t even go there.

NICK

Let’s just hope the poor kid doesn’t look like you, eh.

WILL

Thanks mate. I knew I could count on you.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BRODIE and MILES walk in.

BRODIE

So was she in love with the dull guy or the musician?

MILES

How knows? Both probably.

BRODIE

Aw, too intense.

MILES

Yeah, yeah, French fics usually are. Lots of sideways glances and pregnant pauses.

BRODIE

I really liked it though. I don’t get to see that sort of thing.

MILES

Hey, well, em, I’m addicted to them. I think I must have been French or Italian or something in a past life which sort of explains why I’m such a hot Latin lover.

BRODIE

Pardon.

MILES

Yeah, because I studied Latin and I’m hot.

BRODIE laughs.

MILES

Yeah, I’m sorry, that was a really, really bad joke. Anyway, em, thank you. I had a really nice time tonight.

BRODIE

Yeah, me too.

MILES

So, do you think we could do it again?

BRODIE

Em, I think so.

MILES

Excellent.

MILES and BRODIE kiss.

MILES

I call you.

BRODIE

Em, OK.

MILES

See you.

BRODIE

Bye.

MILES walks out the house. RHYS walks in.

RHYS

Well, well, well. Saw somebody had a good time.

BRODIE

Yeah, em, it started off as a bit of a disaster, but it turned out really good.

RHYS

There the best kind, kiddo.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ALEX and MILES walk in.

ALEX

So it all went well?

MILES

Yeah, you could say that.

ALEX

You could or you would?

MILES

Why? What’s the matter buddy? Are you bothered?

ALEX

No, Miles, as I said I have no feelings for Brodie.

MILES

Right, sure buck.

ALEX

Yeah.

MILES

Yeah. Two thank you.

ALEX

So when’s the next date?

MILES

Em, for somebody that doesn’t give a toss, you’re asking a lot questions?

ALEX and MILES sit down.

ALEX

No, I just want to make sure you have a good time while you’re over here.

MILES

Of course you do.

ALEX

Did you pash her?

ALEX and MILES stand up.

MILES

Alex, I am so not having this conversation with you.

ALEX

Tell me, did you pash her?

MILES

OK, OK, what I will tell you.

ALEX

Ah ha.

MILES

Is you’re an idiot.

ALEX

What?

MILES

Oh, come on man. What were you thinking letting a girl like Brodie away? She’s smart, she’s funny and I still reckon she’s the most gorgeous girl in town.

MILES and ALEX sit down.

ALEX

Miles, you have not seen Dani Sutherland yet.

MILES

Yeah, I have.

THE BEACH

VINNIE is teaching some kids lifesaving. KIRSTY and NICK are there.

VINNIE

All right, my little soldiers. You did good today. Just remember eight thirty, that is eight three zero sharp. No more waiting for latecomers. Pick up the gear.

NICK and KIRSTY walk off together.

KIRSTY

So, what kind of lame excuse do you have this time?

NICK

What?

KIRSTY

Did you forget our number or have you just been too busy?

NICK

What are you talking about?

KIRSTY

Jade. Nick, you haven’t even been around to see her since you got back.

NICK

Aw.

KIRSTY

Aw, is that all you can say for yourself.

NICK and KIRSTY walk off. VINNIE is carrying a surfboard. SEB runs along the beach.

SEB

Hey Vinnie. I’m sorry I couldn’t make it. I tried to call your house, but you weren’t there.

VINNIE

That’s quite all right.  I know you’ve had a lot on your plate at the moment. How’s Jude?

KIRSTY walks behind them.

SEB

OK, I think, but they still won’t let me see him.

VINNIE

Only family, huh.

SEB

Yeah, it sucks.

VINNIE

You take care little man.

VINNIE walks away.

KIRSTY

Hey, what happened to you?

SEB

Ah, I was waiting for Noah to call from the hospital.

KIRSTY

And did he?

SEB

Yeah, they still won’t let me see Jude.

KIRSTY

Don’t worry about it Seb. I have a really good feeling about this whole thing.

SEB

Well, it wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for Shauna.

KIRSTY

Well, we don’t know the whole story.

SEB

I know enough.

SIMONE walks over to them.

SIMONE

Hey, just the guy I was looking for.

SEB

What’s up?

SIMONE

You owe me.

SEB

What?

SIMONE

Slave for a day. Told tell me you’ve forgot.

KIRSTY

Could you be more insensitive.

SIMONE

Sorry.

KIRSTY

Jude is in hospital, like, he almost just died. Do you really think Seb’s got nothing better to do than be your slave for the day?

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS sits at the table. MILES and BRODIE walk in.

MILES

I hope you don’t mind me just dropping in like this.

BRODIE

No, not at all. I wasn’t do anything anyway. You know like, I wasn’t doing important stuff anyway. I really did like that film last night. I’m still thinking about it.

MILES

Yeah, actually I’ve got a confession to make.

BRODIE

You do?

MILES

That’s like the fourth time I’ve seen it.

BRODIE laughs.

MILES

I’m a junkie.

BRODIE

I reckon there’s probably worse things to be addicted to.

MILES

Yeah, well, some of my mates wouldn’t agree though, especially not Alex.

BRODIE

Well Alex wouldn’t, would he? Alex hates subtitles. He always said that if he wanted to spend two hours reading that he’d get a book.

MILES

Have you seen A Girl On A Bridge?

There is a knock on the door.

RHYS

I’ll get it.

RHYS stands up and answers the door. It is WILL.

WILL

G’day Rhys.

RHYS

You’ve got some nerves showing your face around here.

WILL

Yeah, I know you must reckon I’m pretty low.

RHYS

Yeah, well it’s not me that matters, is it?

WILL

Look, can I just explain what happened?

RHYS

No, I think it’s pretty self-explanatory mate.

WILL

Then, can I just see Dani then?

RHYS

I don’t think she wants to see you.

DANI walks into the living room.

DANI

Yes, she does. It’s OK dad. I need to do this.

RHYS walks away from the door. DANI walks up to the door.

THE LAWSON HOUSE

SEB opens the door. SIMONE walks in.

SEB

Hey.

SIMONE

Em, I just came by to apologise about before. Em, I didn’t know about Jude’s accident. I would have never said anything about the stupid slave thing if I knew.

SEB

That’s fine. Kirsty just gets a little worked up sometimes.

SIMONE

What I said last week about you not having to do it, I meant it.

SEB

It’s cool, really.

SIMONE

I don’t get it. What have Jade and her got against me anyway.

SEB

I don’t understand it either.

SIMONE

I mean, it’s not like I did anything wrong. Nick dumped me for Jade. If anyone’s got the right to be angry it’s me.

SEB

I don’t know the whole story, but, em, it’s really none of my business.

SIMONE

You’re Kirsty’s boyfriend. That probably means you hate me to.

SEB

Stop it, OK. Now you’re just being dumb.

SIMONE

Am I?

SEB

Nobody hates you, but you’ve got to admit, you do rub people up the wrong way sometimes.

SIMONE

How do you mean?

SEB

You just come across a bit, full-on, that’s all.

SIMONE

I don’t give anything out they don’t do deserve.

SEB and SIMONE walk into the kitchen.

SEB

Yeah, but you can’t do stuff like that. If you go off at people every time they do something wrong you’re never going to have any friends.

SIMONE

Yeah, whatever. I’ve got to go.

SIMONE leaves.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

WILL sits at the table whilst DANI walks about the living room.

DANI

So you went off at me for going for a drive with Alex and in the meantime, you’re getting it on with Gypsy.

WILL

Yeah, I know that. It was wrong.

DANI

Were you ever going to tell me about it Will?

WILL

I knew how paranoid you were about her.

DANI

Yeah, funny that.

WILL

Dani, it was a mistake. I never stopped thinking about you the whole time.

DANI

Then why? Why did you do it?

WILL

I don’t know. I was confused. You were giving me a hard time. It just sort of happened.

DANI

That is so stupid Will.

WILL

It didn’t mean anything. If I could undo it, I would.

DANI

I hope your baby never hears that. Do you know, you didn’t even bother to tell me you were the father before you took off to the other side of the planet. I had to hear it from her. How do you think that made me feel?

WILL

I only found out twenty minutes before I left.

DANI

But then, you still kissed me goodbye and you still took my letter and you didn’t even say anything.

WILL

Well, what was I supposed to do? Just dump it on you and then leave? Do you know how hard it was for me? That letter that you gave me. Those beautiful amazing words. Dani, I want to be with you forever to and I love you more than anything in this world.

DANI

Can you please go?

WILL

Dani please.

DANI

Just go please.

WILL leaves.

THE LAWSON HOUSE

SEB is hoovering the living room. KIRSTY is there.

KIRSTY

Seb, what is it with you? I never seen you so domestic.

SEB turns the Hoover off.

SEB

I’ve got to keep the place tidy while Jude’s in hospital. Don’t want him coming home to a pigsty.

SEB hands KIRSTY a pizza box.

SEB

Here, make yourself useful.

KIRSTY

I look much better as a supervisor. All right, all right.

KIRSTY goes into the kitchen and puts the box down. She walks back out.

KIRSTY

So, what do you want to do this afternoon? I was thinking we could, you know, get some videos out and just hang out in front of a TV. What do you reckon?

SEB

No, I think I might go down the hospital.

KIRSTY

Aw. Do you reckon they’ll let you see Jude?

SEB

Don’t know. Maybe. Simone came around earlier.

KIRSTY

What for?

SEB

She wanted to apologise about what happened on the beach.

KIRSTY

What a crawler. I can’t believe she actually came around here.

SEB

She’s not that bad.

KIRSTY

Seb, are you kidding? She’s so annoying.

There is a knock on the door.

SEB

Remind me. Never get on your bad side.

SEB answers the door. It’s ALEX.

SEB

Hey.

ALEX

Hey mate. Look, is Noah in?

SEB

No, he’s down at the hospital.

ALEX

Ah, all right. Well just let him know that I came past to see how he’s holding up.

SEB

Yeah, sure. Do you want to get a drink?

ALEX

Em, no, I better get going.

KIRSTY

Hey.

ALEX

Hey Kirsty. So, how are things over your way?

KIRSTY

Ah, it’s a bit of a madhouse actually.

ALEX

Yeah.

KIRSTY

Dani and Will are having a DN, Jade’s not talking to anybody and Brodie won’t stop talking about her new man, but I don’t blame her. He’s really cute.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

DANI is sitting on the couch. RHYS brings across a cup of tea.

RHYS

Here, try this. It’s camomile. It’s supposed to be really soothing.

RHYS sits down on the couch.

DANI

Thanks.

RHYS

Eh, do you want to talk about it?

DANI

I don’t even know where to start. I just don’t get it, you know, if it was me and I’d just broken up with Will then there’d be no way that I’d be looking for anyone else.

RHYS

Yeah, well I think that’s kind of that men are from Mars sort of thing. You know, we sometimes operate differently.

DANI

It’s pathetic, you know. Guys are pathetic. Everything they do is ruled by their hormones.

RHYS

Hey, now, don’t lump us all in together.

DANI

Why not dad? It’s true.

RHYS

Sweetheart. I mean, I know it’s hard to believe now, but it’s not going to hurt forever.

DANI

Come on dad. It’s just not as simple this time, OK.

RHYS

Yeah, I know sweetheart. I know.

MILES and BRODIE are on the veranda.

BRODIE

Do you want to come in?

MILES

Ah, no. I better not. I’ve got a few things to do, but I’ll drop by a bit later.

BRODIE

Yeah, that will be cool.

MILES

See you then.

BRODIE

Bye.

MILES and BRODIE kiss. The phone rings. RHYS answers it.

RHYS

Summer Bay Caravan Park.

THE BEACH HOUSE

NICK is on the phone.

NICK

Ah, Mr. Sutherland. It’s Nick. Is Jade there?

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS is on the phone. BRODIE walks in and over to DANI.

RHYS

Yeah, hang on. I’ll see if she’s here. Jade, Nick on the phone.

BRODIE

Hey, are you all right?

DANI

Been better.

JADE takes the phone from RHYS.

JADE

Hello.

THE BEACH HOUSE

NICK sits out on the porch on the phone.

NICK

Hi, how are you?

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

JADE is on the phone to NICK.

JADE

Fine.

NICK

Look, em, do you want to meet up somewhere and talk?

JADE

There’s nothing to talk about.

THE BEACH HOUSE

NICK is on the phone.

NICK

Aw, come on Jade. Don’t be like that. I want to see you.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

JADE is on the phone.

NICK

Meet me at the wharf in twenty.

JADE

All right.

JADE puts the phone down.

THE WHARF

NICK walks down to the end of the wharf where JADE is already standing.

NICK

Hi. You look good.

JADE

Just get to the point.

NICK

OK, I want to know what’s going on. Are we on or off?

JADE

It seems pretty obvious to me. We’re off.

NICK

Then why did Kirsty have a go at me for not calling you?

JADE

What? Is that the only reason why you bothered to see me? Because of Kirsty?

NICK

No, I haven’t come around before because of the Dani and Will thing.

JADE

Yeah, right.

NICK

It’s true Jade.

They begin walking up the wharf.

JADE

That is so typical Nick. Just hide behind an excuse, why don’t you?

NICK

What about you? You didn’t come and say good bye when I left.

JADE

Well you didn’t call me while you were away or send a postcard.

NICK

I did send a postcard, I swear.

JADE

Then, where is it?

NICK

I don’t know.

JADE

Let me guess. Got lost in the mail.

NICK

It must have.

JADE

You’re so full of it. See you later Nick.

NICK

Jade.

JADE walks away.

THE LAWSON HOUSE

There is a knock at the door. SEB answers it. DON is there.

DON

Ah, I’m not disturbing you, am I?

SEB

No, come in.

DON

Thank you. I won’t take up too much of your time.

SEB

So, what’s going on?

DON

Well, yesterday I offered for you to come and live with me if things got to hard for you around here.

SEB

And now you want to take it back.

DON

No, of course not. It’s quite the opposite in fact. I think it would be a very good idea if you did come and live with me. Well, I see no reason why you should be struggling around here, particularly when Jude’s in n position for quite some time.

SEB

I’m doing fine.

DON

Sebastian, you are my grandson. Now, you and I have been skirting around this issue for quite long enough. I sent you that postcard because I realised how much you meant to me. I am not just offering for you to come and live with me, I am saying I would like you to.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

DANI is taking photos of herself and WILL out of photo album. BRODIE is there.

BRODIE

Hey, what are you doing?

DANI

What does it look like? He was the man of my life.

BRODIE

This doesn’t change anything. You guys are still good together.

DANI

Should have thought of that before he went after Gypsy right.

DANI looks at photo of herself and WILL.

BRODIE

Look at that. It’s when Will got his coxswains ticket.

DANI

What am I going to do Brodie? I can’t hate him.

BRODIE

No, you can’t.

DANI

You know, after everything he’s done and everything he’s put me through, I still love him.

BRODIE

Yeah, and you know that he loves you too.

KIRSTY is out the veranda. JADE walks up to her.

KIRSTY

Hey, where have you been?

JADE

Thanks a lot. You made me look like a complete loser.

KIRSTY

What?

JADE

How could you tell Nick I was waiting for him to call?

KIRSTY

Well, you were.

JADE

Yeah, but you didn’t have to tell him that.

JADE walks into the kitchen. RHYS is there.

RHYS

Jade, are you all right?

JADE

I’m fine.

RHYS

There’s a postcard for you. It arrived today.

JADE

Really.

RHYS

Fridge.

RHYS walks out the kitchen. JADE picks up the postcard. It’s from NICK.

THE LAWSON HOUSE

SEB and DON are there.

DON

Well,  maybe we could make up some ground rules as we went along.

SEB

What if it didn’t work out?

DON

Then at least we would have tried. Seb, the fact of the matter is, we are family whether you like it or not. Almost all the family either of us has and if we don’t get to know one another now we may regret it later on.

SEB

I know you think I need looking after, but I can look after myself and other people. I did it with mum for years.

DON

Well, yes, I suppose that’s true.

SEB

And Jude and Noah have been really good to me? I feel like I owe it to them to stick around.

DON

Right.

SEB

At least for a little while.

DON

Ah, well, the doors always open. I just wanted you to know that.

SEB

Maybe when Jude gets out of hospital and back on his feet I could come check out your place. Do ironing?

DON

Yeah, well I’d certainly like that.

SEB

Good, then, we’ve got a deal, granddad.

DON

Yeah, well, I’m not so sure about the granddad, but all right.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE is sitting down. WILL walks out of his room.

IRENE

G’day love. Where are you off to?

WILL

Gypsy’s. She waiting for me.

IRENE

Oh, well, good luck then.

WILL

Yeah, well, if my chat with Dani’s anything to go by, I’ll need it.

IRENE

That bad, uh.

WILL

Worse, see you later.

IRENE

See you love.

WILL walks out the door. DANI is there.

WILL

Dani. What are you doing here? What’s wrong?

DANI

I really want to hate you and convince myself that I don’t need you, but I can’t. I don’t know. Maybe we can make this work. What do you think?
