Scripts - Episode 3128

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

KIRSTY is looking at some photos. JAN, BRODIE and JADE are there.

KIRSTY

Look at those arms, chubby bubby or what?

BRODIE

I was not chubby.

JAN

She was beautiful and still is.

RHYS walks in.

JAN

Oh, hey Rhys. Early mark.

RHYS

Ah, yeah, have to get this mobs dinner organised.

KIRSTY

Why? Where’s mum?

RHYS

Yabbie Creek. She’s got some meetings on until late so we’re going to have to scrounge up dinner for ourselves.

KIRSTY

Again.

RHYS

Yeah, again. Watch it or you’ll be doing the cooking solo.

JAN

I tell you what. Why don’t I make dinner?

RHYS

Aw, that’s very nice of you Jan, but we’ll manage.

JAN

Aw, I’m sure you can, but, you know, it’s the least I can do. I mean, after all you are putting me up.

RHYS

It’s fine, really.

JAN

No, no, actually, I’d liked to. I insist.

BRODIE

Hey, why don’t I cook mum? You’re the guest.

JAN

Don’t be silly Brodie. You’re hopeless in the kitchen.

JADE

Actually Brodie’s a really good cook. She makes the best moussakka.

JAN

Oh, really. Where did you learn how to do that?

BRODIE

Aw, from Leah or from Leah’s mum.

KIRSTY

It is delicacy.

JAN

Well, I’d like to try sometime.

RHYS

Why not tonight?

BRODIE

Yeah, sure.

SALLY’S HOUSE

SALLY and LEAH walk in. SHAUNA is sitting at the table.

SALLY

It was fantastic. I mean, honestly, I didn’t know if I’d get through it to start with, but once I got up there it was such a buzz.

LEAH

Oh, I wish I didn’t have to work.

SALLY

Yeah, talk about a mean boss.

LEAH

Hey, Shauna.

SHAUNA

Hey.

LEAH

So, more importantly how was your date?

SALLY

It wasn’t exactly, you know, a date date.

LEAH

Aw, you guys are an item, though?

SALLY

Yeah, I guess.

LEAH

Aw, that is so good. I mean, I don’t want to jinx anything, but I reckon you and Flynn will make a really good couple, don’t you reckon Shauna?

SHAUNA

Yeah, absolutely.

SALLY

Thanks.

LEAH

So, more anyway, what are you doing tonight? Are you busy?

SALLY

No, why?

LEAH

Well, how would you want you and Flynn to come over for some dinner?

SALLY

Well, I would, but I’d have to check with him

LEAH

It would just help Vinnie get his mind of this whole police investigation thing that’s all. Oh, Shauna, sorry, I completely forgot. Would you and Jude like to come along as well?

SHAUNA

Em, thanks, but Jude’s going to Melbourne for his law scholarship interview.

LEAH

Doesn’t mean you can’t come.

SHAUNA

Eh, no, thanks, but I don’t want to a fifth will. Besides I’ve got heaps of work to do.

LEAH

OK, then. Now, before I forget, I’ve been looking in here for some bridesmaid’s dresses that I think you’ll absolutely love.

SHAUNA

Em, I’m in the middle of something at the moment.

LEAH

Ah, it won’t take long. Here we go,

SHAUNA

Leah.

LEAH

OK, if you don’t like that one there’s another one in here that’s absolutely stunning. What about this one? You’ll just love.

SHAUNA

Leah, I really have to get through this schoolwork.

LEAH

Aw, OK.

SHAUNA

Sorry, I just have to get it done, OK.

LEAH

Sure, sure, some other time then.

A PUB

ALEX brings drinks to a table where he and HEIDI sit.

HEIDI

Thanks. That’s about four dollars I owe you now.

ALEX

That’s all right. What? Have I got some food on my face or something?

HEIDI

No, I’m just trying to figure out if you are for real.

ALEX

What do you mean?

HEIDI

Well most guys would be all over me by now.

ALEX

Well, in that case I’ve got to work on my technique, don’t i?

HEIDI

Your technique is fine.

ALEX

So, what have you got planned for the rest of the day?

HEIDI

I’m going to hunt out some place to stay. It’s one thing I hate about this job, having to stay in motels. You couldn’t suggest an alternative, could you?

ALEX

Ah, yeah, I reckon we could work something out.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

JAN, RHYS, KIRSTY, BRODIE and JADE are all there.

JAN

So, does Shelley normally work this late?

KIRSTY

Yes.

RHYS

No, not always. She’s meeting this professional fundraiser for the centre. Got to raise about another ten grand or so to keep the place operating. She’s working really hard on this proposal.

JAN

Must be hard on you. I mean, her working all these long hours?

BRODIE

Mum, could you give me a hand please?

JAN

In a moment sweetie. I’m just talking to Rhys. Sorry, you were saying.

RHYS

Aw, just that she’s, you know, cut back on the hours, now it’s not nearly so bad.

JAN

I hope she does though for your sake. I mean, call me traditional and old-fashioned, but I think woman should put their families first.

BRODIE

Dinners ready.

RHYS

Smells great.

KIRSTY

You won’t go hungry.

KIRSTY knocks a glass on the floor.

RHYS

Aw, there goes a family heirloom.

JAN

Aw, Brodie. She’s always been a butter fingers, you know, clumsy.

BRODIE

I’ll get the broom.

JAN

That would be great. Thank you Brodie.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

FLYNN, VINNIE, LEAH and SALLY all sit around the table.

FLYNN

Thank you. That was delicious.

SALLY

Yeah, big improvement on last night.

FLYNN

Never going to live that down.

SALLY

No.

LEAH

Well, I’m glad you liked it. Hey Vinnie, aren’t you going to finish yours?

VINNIE

I’m not really that hungry. I’ll give you a hand, though babe.

LEAH

No, no, you sit down. You relax.

VINNIE

Yeah, just relax.

SALLY

Vinnie, don’t let it get to you. Everybody knows you’re the victim in all of this.

VINNIE

Aw, you think. I’ve been getting some mighty funny looks round here lately Sal.

SALLY

Yeah, but you always get funny looks.

LEAH brings through some coffee.

SALLY

That was a joke Vinnie. Look, everybody knows that you were the one taking advantage off.

VINNIE

Everybody, but the cops.

SALLY

Aw, things will turn around you see.

VINNIE

Yeah, it would just be nice to get some good news for once in my life.

HEIDI and ALEX walk in.

HEIDI

It take it you have housemates. Wo, sure do. Hey, I know you. You’re from the band. You have a great voice.

SALLY

Thanks.

ALEX

Excuse us.

LEAH

Hey, Alexi, aren’t you going to introduce us to your friend?

ALEX

Yeah, ah, Heidi this Flynn, Sally, Vinnie, Leah. Guys this is Heidi.

SALLY

Hey.

HEIDI

Hi.

LEAH

Hey.

HEIDI

Hi.

LEAH

Where are you going?

ALEX

My room.

HEIDI

But.

ALEX

So I won’t get in the way Leah. Come on.

ALEX and HEIDI go into ALEX’S room.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BRODIE, JAN and RHYS are in the kitchen.

JAN

Well, thanks for dinner Rhys.

RHYS

Oh, well, don’t thank me, thank Brodie.

JAN

Of course. It was lovely sweetheart.

BRODIE

Thanks.

JAN

Good night.

JAN kisses BRODIE on the forehead.

BRODIE

Night mum.

JAN leaves.

BRODIE

Rhys.

RHYS

Yep.

BRODIE

I’m just, I’m so sorry about it

RHYS

What for?

BRODIE

Aw, come on Rhys. You know what I’m talking about.

RHYS

Aw, well she’s probably just trying to make up a bit of lost ground, you know, trying to make a really good impression.

BRODIE

Night Rhys.

BRODIE and RHYS walk out of the kitchen. JADE and KIRSTY walk into the kitchen.

JADE

You seriously didn’t notice anything?

KIRSTY

What are you talking about?

JADE

Jan’s got the hots for dad.

KIRSTY

No way. Really. Really, really. Aw, that is so gross.

SALLY’S HOUSE

FLYNN and SALLY walk up to the door.

FLYNN

Lucky we left when we did.

SALLY

Tell me about. I have seen Leah angry. It is very scary.

FLYNN

Still, you know, that aside it was a nice night. Warm between them, us.

SALLY

Us, that could be my favourite word.

They kiss. SALLY opens the door and they walk in. SHAUNA is there.

SALLY

Oh, hey Shauna.

SHAUNA

Hey, I’m just getting a drink of water. I’ll be out of your way in a sec.

SALLY

Aw, that’s all right. You don’t have to.

SHAUNA

No, it’s fine.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

ALEX is in the kitchen. LEAH comes in.

ALEX

Yes, Leah.

LEAH

Well, thank you for embarrassing me in front of my friends.

ALEX

Now what are you talking about?

LEAH

She’s staying over isn’t she?

ALEX

I don’t know. Maybe.

LEAH

Maybe.

ALEX

Yes, maybe. I haven’t discussed it with her yet.

VINNIE walks in.

LEAH

Alexi.

ALEX

Yes.

LEAH

Well, you know yes. You know what I’m talking about OK.

ALEX

Sis, can you just leave me alone for once.

LEAH

No, I will not leave you alone, Vinnie.

ALEX and LEAH walk through to the living room. HEIDI comes out of ALEX’S room.

HEIDI

Sorry. Where’s the bathroom?

ALEX

First on your right, just there.

HEIDI

Thanks.

LEAH

You don’t even know this girl, do you?

ALEX

And, so what?

VINNIE walks past them.

LEAH

You just met her this afternoon.

ALEX

How cares though? I don’t understand.

LEAH

But we weren’t brought up this way, OK.

ALEX

Oh, will you stop trying to act like my mother?

LEAH

I’m not.

ALEX

You’re not.

LEAH

I just don’t appreciate you bringing some girl of the street into our house.

ALEX

What did you say? Off the street.

LEAH

Yeah.

ALEX

Off the street. She is not off the street and even if she was off the street she has every right to be here because I pay rent.

LEAH

Well, they’re other people that live in this house too. OK, just show a little respect.

ALEX

Show some respect. Show me that you have a life Leah.

ALEX walks away.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

SALLY is in the office with PAUL.

PAUL

This sucks.

SALLY

Well, it’s not as complicated as it sounds.

PAUL

But I need the money now.

FLYNN walks in.

FLYNN

Sal, can I see you for a sec, please.

SALLY

Of course. Look Paul, write away and we’ll get you a tax file number and then you can open an account. You should be able to cash that cheque almost straight.

PAUL

I still reckon this sucks.

SALLY and FLYNN go into the kitchen.

SALLY

What’s up?

FLYNN

I just need to excuse.

FLYNN cuddles SALLY.

FLYNN

To do this.

SALLY

Well for future reference, no excuse needed, all right.

BRODIE walks in.

BRODIE

Excuse me, Miss Fletcher.

SALLY

Hi Brodie.

BRODIE

Can I see you for a sec?

FLYNN

Oh, I’ll check the things later.

SALLY and BRODIE walk through to the bedroom.

SALLY

What can I do for you?

BRODIE

It’s about my mum. Look, this is probably going to sound really awful and I don’t want you thinking the worst about her, OK.

SALLY

OK.

BRODIE

She’s sort of been coming on to Rhys.

SALLY

Well, I see. Are you sure that’s what it is? I mean, sometimes people flirt a bit, but it doesn’t necessarily mean everything.

BRODIE

No, she always does this. Especially when she doesn’t have a man in her life. I tried to talk to Rhys and Shelley about it, but they don’t want to hear it. There just trying to pretend like it’s not even happening, but it is.

SALLY

Well obviously Rhys and Shelley seem to think that they can handle it.

BRODIE

Yeah, but, well, that is not the point is it. It’s just totally desperate. Why does she do it?

SALLY

Maybe she’s just lonely. Just trying to make herself feel better. Sounds to me like your mum’s got pretty low self-esteem and some kind of intimacy issue. She’s probably seeking approval from men and she seems to think that the only way she can do that is by throwing herself at them.

BRODIE

It’s still pathetic.

SALLY

Well like I said, Rhys and Shelley don’t seem to be worried about it, but if it bothers you what she does, maybe you should talk to her about it.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

HEIDI and ALEX walk out ALEX’S room.

ALEX

I’ll give you a call next time I’m in the city.

HEIDI

Sure, you know where to find me and thanks again for letting me crash.

ALEX

Ah, anytime.

They walk through to the kitchen. LEAH and VINNIE are there.

HEIDI

Nice to meet you both.

VINNIE

You two, babe.

LEAH

Bye.

ALEX and HEIDI walk outside.

HEIDI

See you, andonna.

They kiss.

ALEX

Bye.

HEIDI leaves. VINNIE starts laughing. ALEX walks inside.

VINNIE

She called him andonas.

LEAH

Andonas.

ALEX

Yeah.

LEAH

Was she just trying to say andoni? Feet down. I can’t believe you could be so.

ALEX

So what?

LEAH

Sleazy.

ALEX

Give me a break.

LEAH

And you, you’re just as bad as him.

VINNIE

What did I say? What did I do?

LEAH

You’re egging him, OK.

ALEX

Leah, I told you that whatever I do in my room is my business OK, so just butt out.

ALEX walks into the living room.

LEAH

Could you believe that?

VINNIE

He does have a point babe.

LEAH

What? Are you saying what he did was OK?

VINNIE

I didn’t say that.

LEAH

Then what are you saying?

VINNIE

Woah, is that the time?

LEAH

Hey, Vinnie.

VINNIE

Yes.

LEAH

Vinnie.

VINNIE

I love you.

VINNIE walks away.

LEAH

Vinnie, come, aw, Vinnie.

THE SURF CLUB

KIRSTY is behind the counter. VINNIE is there. LEAH walks in.

LEAH

Vinnie, I’d like to talk to you.

VINNIE

Oh, I’m kind of busy at the moment.

LEAH

No, you just ran out in the middle of a conversation  that we were having.

VINNIE

OK, just chill.

LEAH

And don’t tell me to chill or to be cool or whatever.

VINNIE

OK, OK.

LEAH

Now I just wanted to say that I don’t agree with you sticking up for Alexi all the time.

VINNIE

I don’t always stick up for him.

LEAH

You do. Now, I don’t care what you and Alexi think, if he’s staying with us then he shouldn’t do things like that.

VINNIE

Leah.

LEAH

No, now he just spent the night with a girl that he just met that afternoon. Now he knows that I don’t agree with things like that.

VINNIE

OK, just calm down.

LEAH

And don’t tell me to calm down. Now, I don’t mind you taking his side. I just wish for once that you could support me.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

JADE and BRODIE are playing table football.  KIRSTY walks in.

KIRSTY

Brods, you’re never going to believe the gossip I just heard.

BRODIE

What?

KIRSTY

Apparently Alex and that lady music reviewer got it together.

BRODIE

What do you mean?

KIRSTY

Like they had a sleepover and Leah is fuming.

BRODIE

Right, em, that didn’t take him long, did it?

KIRSTY

No, no, just goes to he’s such a jerk and you’re ten times better off with out him.

BRODIE

Yeah, yeah, you’re probably right. Em, do you guys want a cuppa?

JADE

No thanks.

BRODIE walks away.

JADE

Could you be more insensitive if you tried?

KIRSTY

What?

JADE

She didn’t have to know that.

KIRSTY

Well I’d want to know if I was her.

JADE

Well not everyone’s like you Kirst.

BRODIE is in the kitchen. JADE walks through.

JADE

Brods, are you OK?

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

LEAH brings a cup over to SHAUNA who is sitting at a table.

LEAH

Here you go. Extra coffee.

SHAUNA

Thank you.

LEAH

Do you mind if I sit down for a second because I have had an awful morning and can really do with a distraction.

SHAUNA

Go for it.

LEAH

Aw, the bump Shauna. I just wanted to say Shauna I’m really sorry about yesterday, OK. I didn’t mean to be pushy about the bridesmaids dress thing.

SHAUNA

Forget it. Look, it’s partly my fault anyway. I’m just being touchy at the moment.

LEAH

Yeah, look, em, I don’t mean to be nosey, but I can’t help, but notice every time there’s even a hint of wedding talk you kind of get all up tight.

SHAUNA

Well it’s stressful, you know that.

LEAH

Oh, I do, I do. That’s why I’m mentioning it. I ran out of wedding myself, not that I’m suggesting that’s what you’re going to do.  No, no, no, I’m just saying that I can kind of sense signs of pre-wedding jitters and I just want you to know, that’s normal and it happened to everybody. Actually, that’s kind of not true either, because I didn’t doubt Vinnie for a second, but that’s besides the point, you know, because it happens to most people sometimes.

SHAUNA

Leah, I know you’re trying to be helpful, but it’s really not helping. I’m not I the mood to talk about this right now.

LEAH

Sometimes it does help to talk about it.

SHAUNA

No, it doesn’t. I am so sick and tired of people sticking their nose in about my stupid wedding. I just wish the whole thing was over.

SHAUNA walks out.

A PUB

SHAUNA sits at a table. A BARMAN serves her.

BARMAN

Do you want to order something to eat?

SHAUNA

No thanks, just another gin and tonic.

BARMAN

Sure thing.

A man, DAVE is playing pool. He watches SHAUNA.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BRODIE is sitting at the table. JAN walks in.

JAN

Sorry I’m late.

BRODIE

Where have you been?

JAN

I had something to do. Brodie, you’ve gone to a lot of trouble and I’ve already eaten lunch.

BRODIE

Mum, I said lunch. We had plans.

JAN

Sorry. So, what was it you wanted to talk to me about?

BRODIE

Just something that happened last night.

JAN

Go on. It can’t be all that bad. Boy trouble.

BRODIE

That’s part of it. Alex, he had a fling with some girl, some girl he had only even just met.

JAN

Slime bags. There all the same. Listen sweetheart, don’t you let him get to you, you here me.

BRODIE

But why did he have to do it mum?

JAN

I don’t know sweetie. I mean, he’s a man. It’s what they do.

A PUB

SHAUNA is drinking. DAVE walks up to the bar.

DAVE

Another one for the lady, mate.

SHAUNA

Em, no thanks, I’ve got to get going.

DAVE

Aw, what’s your hurry? Don’t want to leave me on my lonesome, do you.

SHAUNA

I really have to get going.

SHAUNA stands up and stumbles.

DAVE

Woops-a-daisy. I hope you’re not driving.

SHAUNA

No, of course not.

DAVE

How about I give you a ride? I’ve only had a couple.

SHAUNA

Someone’s coming to pick me up so, thanks anyway.

DAVE

Sure. I’ve got the afternoon off.

SHAUNA picks up a phone.

SHAUNA

I’m sure.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

SALLY and FLYNN are in the kitchen.

SALLY

Aw, I am not going to eat that.

FLYNN

Yes, you are.

SALLY

The army has totally warped your taste buds.

FLYNN

Come on.

SALLY

No, I don’t want any

FLYNN

You know you want to.

SALLY

I’ll make my own.

FLYNN

Saved by the bell.

FLYNN walks through to the office. The phone is ringing. FLYNN answers the phone.

FLYNN

Hello, Sarah McKay Drop-In Centre.

THE PUB

SHAUNA is on the phone.

SHAUNA

Flynn, it’s Shauna.

FLYNN

Hi, where are you?

SHAUNA

I’m at the pub and I’ve had a few too many to drink and I was just wandering if it wouldn’t be too much trouble to come pick me up.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

FLYNN is on the phone.

FLYNN

Well I’m at work. Can’t you get a taxi.

THE PUB

SHAUNA is on the phone.

SHAUNA

I would, but there’s this really creepy guy here and I don’t want to leave by myself.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

FLYNN is on the phone.

FLYNN

What about Noah?

THE PUB

SHAUNA is on the phone.

SHAUNA

I just don’t want him to see my like this. Please Flynn, I just need you to do this for me as a friend?

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

FLYNN is on the phone.

FLYNN

OK.

FLYNN puts the phone down. He walks through to the kitchen where SALLY is.

FLYNN

Sal, I’ve just got to pop out for a sec, OK.

SALLY

How come?

FLYNN

One of my hard luck cases needs a ride to hospital. Can you look after the place for a bit?

SALLY

Yeah, sure.

FLYNN

OK, thanks. See you soon.

THE PUB

SHAUNA sits at the bar. DAVE walks up to her.

DAVE

Sure this friend of yours is going to show.

SHAUNA

Just leave me alone please.

DAVE

Relax babe. I’m just being friendly.

FLYNN walks in.

FLYNN

There you are. Sorry, I’m late babe. Everything’s all right?

DAVE

Sorry mate, I thought she was, you know.

FLYNN

She’s not.

DAVE

Yeah, no worries.

DAVE walks away.

SHAUNA

Thank you. I don’t know what would I would have done.

FLYNN and SHAUNA walk out.

FLYNN

What the hell do you think you’re drinking by yourself in a place like this?

SHAUNA

I’m sorry. Everything is just so mixed up and the moment. I don’t know what’s going on.

FLYNN

This is getting to be a little bit of a pain.

SHAUNA

I know. I know.

FLYNN

Let me just take you home.

SHAUNA

I can’t.

FLYNN

I don’t want anyone to see me like this OK.

SHAUNA

Can’t we just go somewhere and talk.

FLYNN

I think that’s a very good idea.

SHAUNA

Until I sober up. Please Flynn, I don’t want this getting back to Jude.

FLYNN’S CARAVAN

FLYNN and SHAUNA are there.

SHAUNA

I hate having you see me like this.

FLYNN

I know. You’ve had better days.

SHAUNA

I’m such a mess.

FLYNN

I would like to tell you it was pre-wedding nerves, but we’ve been there.

SHAUNA

You know, I feel like I’m lying to everyone. Jude is such a great guy, you know, he’s, em, he’s warm and he’s thoughtful and he doesn’t deserve this.

FLYNN

No, no, he really doesn’t.

SHAUNA

I hate myself for feeling like this, but you know I, em, I just can’t stop thinking about you.

FLYNN

No, Shauna, Shauna, don’t. Just don’t.

SHAUNA

I can’t help it Flynn. I’ve tried, believe me I have tried, but I love you.

FLYNN

Shauna, Shauna, I love Sally.

SHAUNA

I know, but if you weren’t pals with Jude.

FLYNN

No, don’t do this to yourself. You’re not my type. We’re not suited.

SHAUNA

OK, but if things were different.

FLYNN

No, no, no, that’s all there is to it. There is nothing between us, do you understand? I mean there can not be.

SHAUNA leaves the caravan. JADE and KIRSTY see her.

THE ROCKS

VINNIE and LEAH walk along.

LEAH

What do you mean you’ve come from a long line of ladies men? Vinnie.

VINNIE

I just think we should stop telling him how to run his life especially you babe.

VINNIE’S phone rings..

LEAH

I don’t tell him how run is life. Don’t answer that phone, aw.

VINNIE

Hello.

Yes, Vinnie talking.

You’re joking.

What, seriously. How much?

OK, cool, thanks mate.

VINNIE hangs up.

LEAH

Woah, what is it? What’s wrong?

VINNIE

I just won a Hugo.

LEAH

A what?

VINNIE

A Hugo. The most prestigious photo journalism award in Australia.

LEAH

What for?

VINNIE

My landslide photo.

LEAH

Oh, Vinnie, that’s fantastic. Congratulations, aren’t you excited?

VINNIE

Well, yeah, yeah, of course I am. It’s just

LEAH

What?

VINNIE

Well there’s a little tinsy prize that goes along with it. Five thousand dollars.

LEAH cuddles VINNIE.

LEAH

Oh, five thousand dollars. That’s amazing.

VINNIE

I think it’s a sign babe.

LEAH

That is a sign.

VINNIE

Yeah, it’s a sign.

LEAH and VINNIE kiss.
