SUMMER BAY HOUSE

DANI sits at the phone.

DANI

Why won’t you ring? Ring, ring.

KIRSTY and JADE walk in.

JADE

I’ll get some plastic bags.

KIRSTY

Yep.

DANI

What do you want plastic bags for?

JADE

I’m taking Mrs Wilson’s dog out for a walk. I hate when people walk their dogs and don’t clean up after them.

DANI

I wouldn’t pick up doggy dirt for anyone.

JADE

We’re getting ten bucks.

DANI

You’d have to pay me a lot more than ten bucks.

KIRSTY

Do you want to come with us?

DANI

I’m waiting for Will to call. I feel like he’s been gone forever.

KIRSTY

He only left this morning.

DANI

Which means he’ll still be at the airport. The plane doesn’t leave for half an hour yet.

JADE

Why don’t you wait to he gets to the hotel in London and call him there?

DANI

Because that won’t be for ages and besides mum and dad won’t let me call him. They reckon it’s too expensive.

KIRSTY

Well, duh, have you ever offered to pay?

DANI

Well, duh, ever thought that I might have spent all my money on his going away present?

KIRSTY

Well, it sounds like you need a second job.

JADE

Come on, we’ve got to go. I hope he rings.

DANI

Well, if he does I’ll get him to tell Nick to find a phone so he can ring you.

JADE and KIRSTY leave.

DANI

Come on, ring.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

GYPSY sits in the office. SHELLEY walks in. The recording of the band is playing in the background.

SHELLEY

Hey Gyps. Did you find that file?

GYPSY

Em, no, I’m sorry. I’ll get it the now.

SHELLEY

It’s all right. It’s not urgent. Are you feeling a bit vague today?

GYPSY

Yeah, I just can’t seem to get it together.

SHELLEY

Yeah, I know what it’s like. When I was in my last trimester I was in a whole other world the whole time.

GYPSY

I just can’t seem to keep my mind on the job.

FLYNN, SEB, JUDE and NOAH are listening to the tape.

FLYNN

Yeah, it’s not bad.

SEB

Not bad. Man, it’s awesome. Turn it up.

NOAH turns the volume up. SHELLEY comes through.

SHELLEY

Hey, they are people trying to work around here. Who are you listening to?

JUDE

Ah, it’s our band. Alex had it on his Minidisk recorder

SEB

It’s pretty good, ah?

NOAH

Ah, yeah this goose here is our first official groupie.

SHELLEY

Who’s the singer?

JUDE

Well actually, it was.

SALLY walks in.

SALLY

Tell me that’s not what I think it is.

FLYNN

Noah.

JUDE

I was about to say it’s Sal.

SHELLEY

You’re a dark horse, aren’t you?

SALLY

Yeah, well, it’s not very good. We were just mucking about. I didn’t think it would actually get played where people might here it.

JUDE

Hey, we’re all mates here.

SHELLEY

Don’t be so modest Sal. You’ve got a real talent there.

NOAH

Are you sure you don’t want to listen to it anymore?

SALLY

No, I’ve got to get moving. I just came to pick up Gypsy. Are you ready go?

GYPSY

So ready.

FLYNN

Sal, can I just speak to you for a moment?

SALLY

I’m in a bit of a hurry. Can it wait till tomorrow.

FLYNN

Yeah, sure.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ALF and DANI are at the counter.

ALF

Have you heard from Lord Muck yet?

DANI

No, he hasn’t called me yet.

ALF

Been sitting by the phone, have you?

DANI

Modern woman don’t actually sit by the phone.

ALF

Oh, is that right?

DANI

Yeah. Hey, I don’t suppose you have any work going around, do you?

ALF

Well not right now, but when Leah takes time off to have the baby we might?

DANI

But that’s not for ages.

ALF

No, but it’s the best I can do at the minute. So if anything comes up I’ll let you know.

DANI

Thanks.

DANI leaves. JUDE, SEB and NOAH sit at a table.

SEB

Now that we’ve got the CD we can start sending them to all the record companies.

NOAH

What’s this we business. When did you become part of the band?

SEB

Didn’t anyone tell you? I’m the new manager.

JUDE

Well that’s step up from being a groupie.

SEB

Every band needs a manager, plus I’d be really good at it. Don’t even have to pay me anything. Well, not at least until you get your first gig.

JUDE

Thanks mate, that’s very generous of you.

SEB

Before I can do anything for you, you have to come up with a name and before you open your mouths it has to be cool.

JUDE

All right, well, how about Noah’s Ark?

SEB

I said cool.

NOAH

The Disciples.

SEB

You’re doing this to me on purpose.

JUDE

Why don’t we just call ourselves Indecision?

SEB

Look, when you do come up with something good let me know and I’ll start organising some gigs for you.

JUDE

All right, but we’ve got to learn a few more songs first.

NOAH

Well, do you reckon we could do it?

SEB

Oh, for sure. You guys would rock.

JUDE

Ah, before we get ahead of ourselves we maybe want to check with Sally first.

NOAH

Yeah, she didn’t seem to keen, did she?

JUDE

Not keen at all.

SEB

Ay, leave it to me. I’m sure I could persuade her.

SALLY’S HOUSE

SHAUNA walks to the door. FLYNN is there. SALLY and GYPSY sit at the table.

SHAUNA

Oh, hi.

FLYNN

Hi. Didn’t mean to scare you. I was hoping to speak to Sally.

SHAUNA

Sure, come in. I was just on my way out anyway.

FLYNN

Thank you.

SHAUNA

Sal, Flynn’s here to see you.

SALLY

Hi.

SHAUNA

Catch you later.

SHAUNA leaves.

FLYNN

OK. Hope you don’t mind me dropping in like this. It’s just I said it wasn’t important, but it can’t wait.

SALLY

What’s the problem?

FLYNN

Em, some kids at the drop-in centre. Yeah, they’re having a bit of trouble with job application forms. I told them they could come and see you tomorrow.

SALLY

OK.

FLYNN

I cancel it if it’s inconvenient. I know it’s short notice.

SALLY

Oh, no, no, that’s fine. What time are they coming in?

FLYNN

After lunch.

SALLY

Good, I’ll see you then.

FLYNN

Yeah, OK.

GYPSY

Flynn, hang around and have a cup of coffee if you want.

SALLY

Oh, we don’t really have time. We’ve got to get to the birthing class.

FLYNN

Yeah, sure, I’ve got be somewhere anyway. Em thanks. I’ll see you tomorrow.

GYPSY

Bye.

FLYNN

Bye.

FLYNN leaves.

GYPSY

OK, what was all that about?

SALLY

What was what about?

GYPSY

You giving Flynn the big freeze.

SALLY

When?

GYPSY

Sally, you could have just cut the air with a knife. You two couldn’t get enough of each other yesterday. Suddenly you can’t be in the same room as him.

SALLY

You’re just imagining things.

GYPSY

OK, suit yourself, but if you’re not going to tell me I am going to have to ask him. Don’t think I won’t because I will.

SALLY

All right, if you must know, we kind of had a moment.

GYPSY

What kind of moment?

SALLY

Well, an almost kissing sort of moment.

GYPSY

Almost.

SALLY

Well he pulled away at the last second.

GYPSY

Why?

SALLY

Well he was confused. He said that if he kissed me it would have to be more than that and he couldn’t give me more than that last night.

GYPSY

That’s so lame.

SALLY

Yeah, well it doesn’t matter anyway. I hadn’t even thought about him like that until it happened.

GYPSY

But you do now?

SALLY

No. I don’t know. It’s pointless. I just have to try forget it ever happened and get on with things.

GYPSY

It’s going to make it hard for you two to work together though?

SALLY

I don’t see why. If he wants to be funny about it that’s his problem.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

LEAH and SHAUNA are there.

SHAUNA

How come you didn’t go to birthing classes tonight?

LEAH

Because Vinnie had to go and see all these creditors to give them back the money we owe and kind of didn’t want to go without him.

SHAUNA

Right.

LEAH

Yeah. So where are those bridal magazines you promised me?

SHAUNA

Aw, I completely forgot.

LEAH

Shauna, how am I supposed to take-over your wedding if you leave the mag behind? Lucky for you I’ve still got some left. Now there’s something in here that I wanted to show you.

SHAUNA

Look, we only want to have a small wedding, OK, because we can’t to afford to have a big one and even if we could we can’t.

LEAH

Ay, it doesn’t have to be expensive to be beautiful. Trust me, you’ll really like this.

SHAUNA

You don’t give up, do you Leah?

LEAH

Of course, you should know me by now.

VINNIE walks in.

VINNIE

Hiya babe.

LEAH

Hey.

VINNIE

Hey Shauna.

LEAH

How did it go bubs?

LEAH and VINNIE kiss.

VINNIE

Well, I paid everyone off.

LEAH

Yeah, so everything’s sorted out.

VINNIE

Yeah, I got a few funny looks from people. I think they thought I was going to rip them off again. I guess my names not to good around here.

LEAH

They shouldn’t be blaming you.

VINNIE

Aw, they’ve got to blame someone.

SHAUNA

Well, at least the debts paid off now.

VINNIE

Yeah. Listen, I’m just going to grab a shower.

LEAH

OK.

VINNIE

Got to get out of these clothes.

VINNIE leaves.

SHAUNA

Not had any luck in finding Ralph yet?

LEAH

No, not that we know of. Obviously he had his getaway planned for weeks. Vinnie says he pretty good at that sort of thing.

SHAUNA

Don’t worry, they’ll find him.

LEAH

Yeah, I just hope they give me some time alone with him when they do. Nobody hurts my Vinnie like that and gets away with it. Nobody.

THE SURF CLUB

ALF and SHELLEY are there. KIRSTY and SEB are playing pool.

SHELLEY

We have had our deadline extended, but we’ve only got three weeks to get all the work done.

ALF

Well, you shouldn’t have to much trouble getting the place sorted out for three weeks, should you?

SHELLEY

No, we shouldn’t if we had the money, which is why I’m here. I need to organise a fundraising event and I was hoping you might be able to suggest a venue.

ALF

What do you have in mind?

SHELLEY

Aw, I was thinking of a fete with raffles and stalls, that sort of thing.

ALF

Well I think this joint would be a bit small for you. Maybe the community hall would be your best bet.

SHELLEY

Oh, yeah. Do you know who I should speak to about it?

ALF

Well the caretaker is a mate of mine. I’ll have a word if you like.

SHELLEY

OK, thanks Alf.

ALF

You know in my experience with these things you need to get the whole family involved. Games for the littlies, something for the teenagers. One of those head thumping rock bands or a DJ usually goes down pretty well.

SHELLEY

Yeah, it’s going to take a lot of organising.

VINNIE is outside. CHRIS draws up in his Camara.

VINNIE

Chris.

CHRIS

Hey.

VINNIE

What are you doing here?

CHRIS

Come to see you and Leah.

VINNIE

Come to give me a hard time too, ah, or you just here to check up on me?

CHRIS

No, mate, I’m came to see how you guys are doing.

VINNIE

Mate.

CHRIS

Hey listen man, I heard about what happened. That was rough.

VINNIE

Look, I’m sorry. We’re still mates, right?

CHRIS

Yeah, we’re still mates. You just remember that, ah. What do you think of the car?

VINNIE

I like it, I like it. Well isn’t this your old piece. What happened to the Merc? Don’t tell me you pranged it, please.

CHRIS

The Merc is safe and sound at home.

VINNIE

So what’s the story?

CHRIS

You know how much I love my Camara, right.

VINNIE

I know, I know.

CHRIS

Well since I’ve had the Merc I haven’t been using it very much and a classic machine like this just sitting out alone on the street, neighbourhood like ours. A car like this is just waiting for someone to have a go at it right.

VINNIE

So why don’t you sell it?

CHRIS

I can’t just sell this to anyone, man. I’ve got to make sure it’s going to a good family and I can’t think of better place than right here.

VINNIE

Well, you mean.

CHRIS

If you want it, it’s yours.

NOAH is behind the counter. JADE, DANI and ALF are all there.

ALF

Noah, have you got a minute?

NOAH

Oh, yeah, Mr. Stewart.

ALF

I need someone to help out on the boat while Will is away. I just thought you might be interested.

NOAH

Tempting, but Jude would spew if I took on anymore work with the HSE and all.

ALF

Fair enough.

DANI

I’ll do it.

ALF

You.

DANI

Well, I told you I was looking for work.

ALF

Yeah, but you’re not strong enough. I mean it’s to hard for you.

DANI

It’s not a slave galley is it? I don’t have to row the boat.

ALF

No, but there’s a lot of lifting and carrying.

DANI

I know. Aw, come on Mr. Stewart, please.

ALF

No.

DANI

Why not? Is it because I’m a girl, isn’t it?

ALF

No, it’s because you’re not strong enough.

DANI

How do you know?

ALF

Well have a look at you. It’s obvious.

DANI

Because I’m a girl. I don’t know if you know, but they’ve actually let woman into the armed forces now.

NOAH

I heard it’s illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender.

ALF

You stay out of it. This isn’t a glamorous job you know. It’s hard mucky work.

DANI

I’m prepared to get dirty.

JADE

Yeah, right.

DANI

Aw, come on Mr. Stewart. Please, if you just take me out once I will promise you I’ll be the best deckhand you’ve ever had.

ALF

Why do you want to do this?

DANI

Because you said I couldn’t and because I need the work.

NOAH

Remember, she could report you if you don’t give her a fair go.

ALF

All right, I’ll give you a trial.

DANI

Thank you Mr. Stewart.

ALF

Let’s just see whether you want to say thank you Mr. Stewart this time to tomorrow.

SALLY’S HOUSE

SALLY is in the kitchen. GYPSY is on the couch.

SALLY

Hey, shouldn’t you be at work?

GYPSY

Yeah, I just can’t seem to get it together this morning.

SALLY

Do you want a lift?

GYPSY

Not really.

SALLY

What is it Gypsy? I know something’s been bugging you. You haven’t been yourself for the last couple of days.

GYPSY

Will knows.

SALLY

How?

GYPSY

He put two and two together just like you said.

SALLY

Have you talked to him?

GYPSY

Yeah. You know, I thought I had this all sorted out. I just, I could live here, I could work at the drop-in centre, I could have my baby,  but now he knows and I realise this whole sad, safe little world that I’ve had to my own it’s just, it’s built on quicksand and everything is falling apart. I don’t know what I’m going to do.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

COLLEEN, CHRIS and LEAH are all in the kitchen.

LEAH

You shouldn’t have done that.

CHRIS

Why? You need a car and it’s perfect for you although you might have to take the sub-woofer out of it.

LEAH

Well, how did Vinnie take it when you offered it to him?

CHRIS

He was surprised, but he seemed pretty stoked.

LEAH

Are you sure?

CHRIS

What’s up with you Sis? I’m giving you guys a free car.

LEAH

I know. It’s just that it’s been really hard on Vinnie accepting all this money from our family. Colleen, can you hold the fort for a while? I’m off to see Vinnie.

COLLEEN

Off you go, I’ll be fine.

LEAH leaves.

CHRIS

You worry to much Leah.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

SHELLEY is on the phone.

SHELLEY

Tell her not to rush if she’s not feeling up to it. Thanks for calling Sally.

FLYNN is also there.

FLYNN

Is there a problem?

SHELLEY

Oh, Gypsy’s running a bit late. She overslept.

FLYNN

Sally, is she still coming in?

SHELLEY

Yeah, as far as I know.

DANI runs in.

DANI

Guess what. I have a job for the holidays.

SHELLEY

Really. Doing what?

DANI

I’ll be on the water. It’ll give me a chance to work on my tan.

SHELLEY

Doing?

DANI

I’m Alf’s new deckhand.

SHELLEY

You mean you’re taking Will’s job while he is away.

DANI

Yeah, it will be great. Cruising up and down the coast. I’ll be in the fresh air.

SHELLEY

I think there’s a bit more to it than that.

DANI

Yeah, I know, but Alf wasn’t going to give me the job. He said I couldn’t have it because I was a girl so I practically hassled him to he gave in.

FLYNN

Good for you.

SHELLEY

Are you sure you know what you’re doing Dani? I mean, it is Alf’s business. If you’re just trying to prove a point.

DANI

I know that, but if Will can do it I can do it standing on my head.

DANI leaves and JUDE walks in.

JUDE

Hey guys.

FLYNN

Hey.

JUDE

Is Gypsy around?

SHELLEY

No, she’s running a bit late this morning.

JUDE

All right, I’ve got these notes for her from TAFE. Can I leave them with you?

SHELLEY

Yeah, that’s fine. I’ll make sure she gets them. Actually while I’ve got you here I’ve got a proposal for you and you to Flynn.

JUDE

Oh yeah.

SHELLEY

We’re organising a fundraiser for the centre and I was wondering if your band would be interested in playing.

JUDE

What do you reckon? Sounds like a bit of fun.

FLYNN

We’d have to ask the other band members, but.

JUDE

Come on, Noah would be into it.

FLYNN

I was more thinking about Sal.

JUDE

Well you just have to work a bit of that old Saunders magic on her, don’t you mate?

FLYNN

Oh yeah.

THE SURF CLUB

CHRIS, KIRSTY, SEB, LEAH and VINNIE are all outside the surf club walking towards the Camara.

LEAH

Vinnie, oh please, will you come back to the diner, OK, and have some lunch.

VINNIE

Not hungry babe.

LEAH

But I’m making your favourite. Are you sure you don’t want to come?

CHRIS

Isn’t she a goddess?

SEB

Man, if this was my car there would be no chance that I would give it away.

CHRIS

Yeah, I’ve got to say. It’s pretty tough, but the Merc softens the blow.

SEB

A Merc. A Merc is boring. This is cool.

KIRSTY

Not that cool.

VINNIE

I tell you mate. It must have a fair bit of pick-up.

CHRIS

Bro.

VINNIE

Is it V8?

CHRIS

V8, yeah, three fifty, two, four, five, horsepower. Do you want to take a test drive?

LEAH

Vinnie, why don’t you come and have some lunch?

VINNIE

Babe, does the V-Man live of food alone?

VINNIE and CHRIS get into the Camara.

LEAH

Well, you usually do.

VINNIE

Priorities.

LEAH

I’m your priorities. Vinnie, Vinnie, your seatbelt.

VINNIE and CHRIS drive away.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

SALLY and a kid in the drop-in centre, TRENT are at the computer.

SALLY

Now, here you have to list your previous employment history, just starting from your most previous job. Think you’ll manage it?

TRENT

I’ll give it a go.

SALLY

OK.

SALLY gets up. JUDE and FLYNN come out of the office.

JUDE

Hey Sal. How would you feel about doing something really good for the drop-in centre?

SALLY

Like what?

JUDE

Well, think about all the good work that gets done here. Think about how terrible it would be if we have to shut this place down? Think about the tragedy it’s going to be if all these.

SALLY

Yeah, yeah, yeah, all right. All right, just tell me Jude.

JUDE

Shelley wants a band to appear at the fundraiser.

SALLY

In public.

JUDE

That’s general idea, yeah.

SALLY

Well, I couldn’t do that.

FLYNN

I mean, if you don’t want to, it’s OK. We could get another.

JUDE

No, we can’t. Who’s side are you on? Look, if you’re just getting a bit nervous, then close your eyes and imagine that whole audience is naked.

SALLY

And how’s that going to help me?

JUDE

I don’t know, but it’s supposed to work. Come on, Shelley really needs our help.

SALLY

Well, can’t it just have a cake stall instead.

JUDE

You’re too young for cakes, besides, you have got that special something that this lacklustre outfit really needs.

SALLY

All right, I’ll do it, but I promise, this is the one and only time.

JUDE

Yes, Sal you’re a champ.

TRENT walks over to JUDE, SALLY and FLYNN.

TRENT

Having trouble with the question.

SALLY

Oh, better get back to work.

JUDE

Yeah.

FLYNN

Yeah, me two.

FLYNN goes into the office and SALLY and TRENT go over the computer. JUDE walks over to GYPSY.

JUDE

Hey.

GYPSY

What do you think about Sally and Flynn?

JUDE

What about Sally and Flynn? Aw, I always thought they would be good together, but Shauna told me she I was way off track.

GYPSY

Aw, she did, did she.

JUDE

What? What?

GYPSY

Nothing.

JUDE

So you really think there’s something going on there?

SALLY and TRENT are at the computer.

SALLY

Now, if you need a hand with anything else you just let me know, all right.

TRENT

Thanks.

SALLY

OK, see you.

TRENT leaves and FLYNN walks over to SALLY.

FLYNN

Another success story?

SALLY

Aw, just had to lead him in the right direction. Actually I’ll think he’d make a great candidate for when those classes start up at the school, that’s if he’s got time after he’s get the job.

FLYNN

Do you think he’s in with a chance?

SALLY

Well, he really wants it and he does meet the list of criteria. I don’t see why not.

FLYNN

So, what are you doing now? Do you want to go get a coffee or a drink? Have a chat.

SALLY

Oh, I can’t. Besides I’ve got loads of assignments to mark.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

ALF walks in. SHELLEY is there. DANI, JADE and KIRSTY are sitting on the couch.

ALF

G’day. Could I have a word with Dani?

SHELLEY

Sure.

ALF

I need you to work tomorrow. Are you available?

DANI

Yeah, of course.

ALF

Well we start down at the wharf about five. You reckon you can manage that?

DANI

No problem.

ALF

Good on you. I’ll see you then, ay, and, oh, don’t wear anything to flash.

ALF leaves.

JADE

You’ve never woken up at five a.m. in your entire life.

KIRSTY

No, no, she has to be at the wharf for five which means Dani, you’re going to have to get up at least four thirty.

DANI

Easy.

SHELLEY

Perhaps you should have an early night.

KIRSTY

And in case you’re wondering how it ends, the ship sinks and Leo freezes to death.

JADE

Yeah, kind of appropriate really, although there’s not many icebergs in Summer Bay.

SHELLEY

Dani, I really think you should have an early night. You normally at your sparkling best when you haven’t had enough sleep.

DANI

No, I’m going to watch this movie if it kills me. Will was always whinging about having no life. Well I’m going to prove to him that you can work and still have a life.

SHELLEY

Suit yourself.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

LEAH and SHAUNA are sitting on the couch. VINNIE and CHRIS come in.

LEAH

Vinnie, is that you? Vinnie, where have you been? I’ve been trying to ring on the mobile and you haven’t answered. Are you all right? What’s happened?

CHRIS

We’re more than all right.

LEAH

Aw, you smell.

CHRIS

Yeah, we were down at the pub.

LEAH

Yeah.

CHRIS

But don’t worry, Vinnie was the desig.

VINNIE

Designated driver. I’ve got to look after this one.

SHAUNA

Em, maybe I should go. Not expecting that.

CHRIS

Hey beautiful. What’s your name?

LEAH

This is Shauna, you idiot, and she’s engaged and you’ve already met.

SHAUNA leaves.

VINNIE

Listen, I’m sorry I didn’t call. The battery was flat. I didn’t worry you though, did I?

LEAH

A little bit.

VINNIE

Oh, well I never, ever want you to worry about me again. Have you got any food?

LEAH

Oh, dinners in the fridge.

VINNIE

That is a good bloke.

LEAH

Yeah, I know.

VINNIE

No, I mean it. He’s a right up there good bloke.

LEAH

Yeah, well you’re not to bad yourself even if you do smell. Thank you for putting a smile back on his face.

CHRIS

Don’t tell me I did something right for a change.

LEAH

Yeah.

SALLY’S HOUSE

SALLY is at the computer. GYPSY walks out of her room.

GYPSY

Still up.

SALLY

Yeah, I’ve got loads of work to do. Can’t you sleep?

GYPSY

My minds going a million miles per hour.

SALLY

Thinking about Will?

GYPSY

It’s like I keep on having these moments of realisation. Yes, it is a good thing that he knows, but what about everybody else now? What about Shelley? I won’t be able to work at the drop-in centre any more and not just because of Dani, I mean, that doesn’t help, but Shelley’s supposed to, Shelley is my friend and I’ve lied to her. She’s not the only one. I thought I had this all under control. I thought it was all going to be OK, but certainly not OK.

SALLY

It will be, eventually.

GYPSY

I can’t handle this. The best thing for me to do is just move out of town before Will gets back. That way, no one has to know the truth. We can just all get on with our lives.

SALLY

You can’t be serious.

GYPSY

I’ve made up my mind. I’m going.
