THE SURF CLUB

HAYLEY and NOAH walk along outside.

HAYLEY

You guys were amazing.

NOAH

Thanks.

HAYLEY

I mean, I thought you’d be good, but not that good and when Sally got up there and sang. Wahl.

NOAH

No, really thanks.

HAYLEY

You know what I mean.

NOAH

Hayls, I’m just playing like I always do.

HAYLEY

Yeah, I guess you do.

NOAH

It’s the great thing about us, right?

HAYLEY

Yeah.

NOAH

Well it used to be anyway. You know I never stopped wanting us to get back together. I guess you don’t want to go that far yet.

HAYLEY

Noah, look, I’ve got so much on right now. I mean I’m going overseas and that’s all I’ve really been thinking about lately and then there’s the HSE.

NOAH

Yeah, it doesn’t have to be right now. I just want to know if there is a chance, you know, of us getting back together.

HAYLEY

I don’t know. I mean, maybe I should have time alone for a while. After Aidan and everything, I think I need things through, but I’m not saying there’s no chance at all so.

NOAH

So I guess it’s going to be a hopeful desperate instead of a hopeless desperate while you’re away.

HAYLEY

Yeah, something like that.

NOAH

Sounds good to me.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

GYPSY and SHAUNA are there.

GYPSY

Hey, this one is yours.

SHAUNA

Thanks.

GYPSY

No, thank you. I was starving.

GYPSY goes into her drawer.

GYPSY

Has someone been at my desk?

SHAUNA

Oh, yeah, sorry. I forgot to tell you Will came by to see you.

GYPSY

Did he say what he wanted by any chance?

SHAUNA

No, he was going to leave a note and then he just took off. Anyway I’ll be out here if you need me.

GYPSY

OK.

FLYNN and SALLY walk along.

FLYNN

You were really good. Let me put proud of you.

SALLY

OK, you’re allowed. Hey stranger, what are you doing here?

FLYNN

Hey, why did you back out of rehearsals? You missed a hell of a show. This one just turned it on for us with her singing prowess.

SHAUNA

Oh, I’m sorry I missed it. I had to cover for Gypsy while she went out to get some lunch.

GYPSY walks through.

SALLY

Hey Gypsy, what’s wrong?

GYPSY

Hey, I’m just an idiot.

SALLY

Why?

GYPSY

Because I was supposed to go to Helen’s place. We’ve got this group assignment and I forgot all about it.

FLYNN

Well, do you want me to cover your shift?

GYPSY

Could you?

FLYNN

Yeah, I’ve got nothing else on. Could test the bond with the newest band member.

GYPSY

Great. Thank you. I owe you so much.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

DANI and JADE sit at a table.

JADE

So, you’ve got how many weeks without Will?

DANI

Two.

JADE

You’re going to be a nightmare to live with.

DANI

No, I’m going to be a sad case, which means you’re going to be nice to me.

JADE

When am I not nice?

NICK walks in and over to DANI and JADE’S table.

NICK

Hi guys.

DANI

Excited about your trip?

NICK

Yeah, I guess.

DANI

Nick, you’re going to London. It’s like the coolest place on the planet. You get to see in-flight movies, duty free shopping.

JADE

Museums, The Tower Of London.

NICK

What happens there?

JADE

They chop prisoners heads off.

NICK

Aw, right. Ah Jade, do you want me to get you something when I’m over there.

JADE

No, I’ll be OK, thanks.

NICK

I better get the food. Irene won’t be a happy camper. See ya.

DANI

See ya.

NICK walks away.

DANI

What was that you were saying earlier about being nice?

JADE

I was.

DANI

I’ll be OK, thanks, sounded more like I don’t want to talk to you.

JADE

It’s his fault. He made me feel like such a try hard when I was telling him about The Tower Of London.

DANI

Jade, he’s probably embarrassed because he’s doesn’t know what you know.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

JADE and DANI walk in.

DANI

What I don’t understand is why you two can’t just get it on and stop torturing everyone else around you with your angst. Go and talk to him Jade. He’s leaving tomorrow. You’re running out of time.

JADE

I’m not going to make the first move.

DANI

That is not the first move. He’s just done that at the diner. He asked if you wanted anything overseas.

JADE

He was just being polite.

DANI

Aw, Jade, you’re clueless. The guy is obviously into you. He couldn’t keep his eyes off you when he was standing at the counter.

JADE

He was just.

DANI

He was looking at you. Are you seriously going to let him go to London without even saying goodbye.

JADE

Yes.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE and NICK are there. NICK is eating something.

IRENE

Oi, enough bucko. You ate half them on the way home.

NICK

I was hungry.

IRENE

Like we’re not. Here, set the table. Ou.

NICK

I saw Jade at the diner.

IRENE

Oh, yeah. How did it go?

NICK

She didn’t want to know me as usual.

IRENE

And how do you figure that one?

NICK

I just do.

IRENE

Well come on love. Talk to me, you brought it up.

NICK

It’s just like I asked her if she wanted me to get her anything from London and she siad that she didn’t.

IRENE

And this is the reason you think she doesn’t want a bar of you.

NICK

Well it’s pretty obvious.

IRENE

What? And the fact that everyone else in the town reckons the girl is crazy for you doesn’t rate a mention. You’re the expert.

WILL walks in.

IRENE

Oh, finally. Where have you been?

WILL

Around. Why?

IRENE

Well in case it escaped your notice Will we’re flying out tomorrow.

WILL

All right, I’m sorry.

IRENE

Well why haven’t you packed then?

WILL

OK, I’ll pack now.

IRENE

And can you please try and get out of the right side of the bed tomorrow.

WILL

I’m sorry, I’ve had things to do.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

FLYNN is on the phone.

FLYNN

No mate, Gypsy left a while ago.

THE BEACH HOUSE

WILL is on the phone.

WILL

I thought she was working today.

FLYNN

Mate she was. She’s been checking out some friend’s place. Said she had some new assignment to work on.

WILL

Do you know what time she’ll be back?

FLYNN

It’ll be late, I think. I can dig up the number for where she’s at if you like.

WILL

No, it’s fine.

FLYNN

Are you sure?

WILL

Yeah, I’ll catch up with her later. See ya.

FLYNN

Bye.

He hangs up and then looks at a photo of himself and DANI. IRENE and HAYLEY are in the kitchen.

IRENE

If it’s any work you’d never guess this family was off on a jaunt overseas the way you lot have been carrying on today.

HAYLEY

You were right Irene.

IRENE

I usually am darl, but what in particular are you referring to?

HAYLEY

Noah. He wants us to get back together.

IRENE

No surprises there love. Blind Freddie could have seen that coming

HAYLEY

Yeah, I guess.

IRENE

Don’t sound real thrilled about it.

HAYLEY

I sort of I am. Sort of not.

IRENE

Sounds more sort of not to me.

HAYLEY

I don’t know. I really don’t know.

IRENE

But you still care about him, don’t you.

HAYLEY

Yeah, of course I do and it’s just I’ve got so much on right now and I’m.

IRENE

Yeah, I know. We’re going overseas, you’ll probably meet up with Prince William and he’ll sweep you off your feet.

HAYLEY

I hadn’t really thought about that.

IRENE

I’m sorry love. I shouldn’t be joking about it.

HAYLEY

It’s just that Noah seemed so sure it was the right thing to do. I mean after everything that’s happened he’s confident that we’re meant to be together and I just don’t think I could ever be that sure.

IRENE

But you’re not ruling it out.

HAYLEY

No, because I still like him a lot, but I just can’t forget all the awful stuff that has happened between us.

IRENE

Well, one thing is for sure love, you don’t have to rush into anything now. I mean, just take it day by day. The next couple of weeks apart will probably do you the world of good. You know, clear your head over things.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

NOAH walks in singing. FLYNN is in the office.

NOAH

That’s right.

FLYNN

Someone’s in a good mood.

NOAH

Sure am.

FLYNN

Wouldn’t happen to have anything to do with a certain Smith girl would it mate.

NOAH

Possibly.

FLYNN

Come on, spill.

NOAH

Well there’s nothing to tell. We went for a walk along the beach.

FLYNN

And.

NOAH

I asked her straight out if there was a chance for us. She still wasn’t sure, but she didn’t say no and I’m shamelessly hanging on to that so therefore the good mood.

FLYNN

That’s great news mate. Very happy for you.

SHAUNA and SALLY are in the kitchen.

SHAUNA

So you and Flynn seem to be getting on really well.

SALLY

Yeah, we had a really good time.

SHAUNA

That’s good.

FLYNN comes in.

FLYNN

Ah, missed all the fun again.

SALLY

Yeah, lucky you.

FLYNN

OK, then, I’ll make it up to you. Walk you home.

SALLY

It’s hardly any distance, but OK. Are you heading home?

SHAUNA

No, I’m going over to Jude’s place. You guys go.

SALLY

OK.

FLYNN

Hey, I get you all to myself. Goodnight

SALLY’S HOUSE

FLYNN and SALLY are there.

FLYNN

Guess we better watch out. This singing thing takes of for you, you’re going forget Summer Bay and all of us little people.

SALLY

Never.

FLYNN

Guess I could be your first groupie. What’s the politically correct term, band day?

SALLY

You’re going to have to stop this. My ego is going to get out of control and that’s not a pretty site.

They go to kiss. FLYNN pulls away.

FLYNN

Em, I’m going to get going, I’m a bit worn out. Been hyper all day. Had a great day with you today.

SALLY

Yeah, me too.

FLYNN

I’m going to get going.

SALLY

OK.

THE SURF CLUB

FLYNN is walking alone. He walks into SALLY.

FLYNN

Sal.

SALLY

Hi. Have you got a minute to talk?

FLYNN

Yeah. I was just coming to see you actually.

SALLY

You were?

FLYNN

Yeah.

SALLY

Last night was confusing for me.

FLYNN

Yeah, me too.

SALLY

Am I deluding myself or was there a moment?

FLYNN

Yeah, there was and I think it’s been coming for a while, don’t you?

SALLY

To be honest I hadn’t really thought about it. We’d become such good friends and that was enough for me. Now it’s like you’ve created this problem.

FLYNN

I didn’t mean to create a problem. I care about you.

SALLY

You’ve got a funny way of showing it. Last night felt as though you wanted something to happen. I mean it surprised me at first, but then I thought that it was the right thing to do. It felt right and then you get this look come over saying that you can’t wait to get away from me. You know how terrible that made me feel?

FLYNN

Yeah, Sal.

SALLY

I don’t want you to feel sorry for me. I’m fine. I have to tell you, I was better than fine before last night.

FLYNN

Sal, I haven’t felt like this around someone in a long time. It’s just my life is so complicated.

SALLY

Well mine was quite simple up until now.

FLYNN

I know. I’m so sorry for that. I should have thought it through more. It’s just I’ve been thinking about us that way for a little while now. I didn’t think you were interested. Then the way you looked at me and I couldn’t go through at anyway. There’s too much at risk here.

SALLY

Why am I such a risk?

FLYNN

Well, what if I had to leave Summer Bay without any notice to look for my sister. How fair would that be to you? You don’t know how hard it would be for me and it’s just going to get harder and harder.

SALLY

I understand about your sister Flynn and your priorities. What I don’t understand is how I can feel so hurt because of some moment that never really was.

FLYNN

Well this is what I’m trying to say. It wasn’t just some little moment. We have a connection.

SALLY

We did. Thanks.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

JADE looks at the compass DANI has bought for WILL. DANI is there.

JADE

To Will, my true north. Love always Dani.

DANI

Do you think he’ll like it? You don’t think it’s too soppy?

JADE

No, he’ll love it. Are you going over there now?

DANI

Ah, yeah, they’re leaving in a couple of hours. It’s your last chance.

JADE

No way.

DANI

You’ll regret it.

JADE

I’ll look like I’m desperate.

DANI

Jade, we have gone through this. The guy wants you badly. Why won’t you believe me? I can always tell him how you’re feeling.

JADE

Don’t you dare open your big mouth.

DANI

I’ll be there.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

WILL walks in. FLYNN is there.

FLYNN

Hiya Will.

WILL

Hey. Is Gypsy here?

FLYNN

Eh, no mate. Expecting her back anytime though. About half an hour late.

WILL

OK.

FLYNN

Do you want to wait here for her?

WILL

No, I’ll catch you later.

FLYNN

All right mate.

THE BEACH HOUSE

DANI and IRENE are there.

DANI

Do you know where he meant?

IRENE

No idea darl, but if he doesn’t get his buck home soon we’re going to be leaving here without him.

HAYLEY comes down the stairs.

HAYLEY

Irene. Hiya Dani.

IRENE

What now?

HAYLEY

Can you give me a hand?

IRENE

Hayley, why aren’t you ready?

HAYLEY

I am. Well almost. I just need help squashing my bags.

IRENE

Bags. We’re going for two weeks, not two years.

HAYLEY

Yes, I know.

NICK comes out his room.

IRENE

Please, tell me you at least are ready.

NICK

Yes, for the sick hundredth time. One small bag.

IRENE goes upstairs.

NICK

Hayley’s going to be one that needs extra bag allowance anyway. Hey Dani.

HAYLEY

Oh, so in other words you plan on being you’re usual grubby self. Wearing the same clothes day in and day out.

DANI

Nick, do you know where Will went this morning?

NICK

No and Irene’s freaking out.

DANI

Yeah, I noticed.

NICK

Hey, Jade didn’t say anything coming over this morning?

DANI

No. Sorry.

THE BEACH

WILL spots GYPSY walking along the beach. He goes down to talk to her.

GYPSY

Hey.

WILL

Why didn’t you tell me?

GYPSY

I couldn’t.

WILL

You couldn’t. You’ve really outdone yourself this time, Gyps.

GYPSY

Will.

WILL

Didn’t you think I’d find out? Didn’t you think I had the right to know?

GYPSY

I wanted to tell you so many times, but.

WILL

I heard you the first time. You couldn’t. It’s not that you didn’t have a chance. You had a hell of a long time to tell me.

GYPSY

I knew it would change you’re entire life. I couldn’t do that to you, I care too much.

WILL

Are you for real?

GYPSY

Yes.

WILL

You don’t care about me. All you have ever done is screw up my life. You don’t care about me.

GYPSY

Think about it for a second Will. Don’t you think there’s a reason why I didn’t tell you this? Don’t you think there’s a reason why I tried so hard for you not to find out you’re the father.

WILL

You going to tell me this is for my own good.

GYPSY

Is it so hard for you to believe?

WILL

You know, I was so close to giving it to that Andrew guy for not supporting you and all along you were just playing games. Using him.

GYPSY

I never slept with him and I never ever said he was the father.

WILL

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about that. That’s really clever how you did that whole thing. I don’t get how you can be so manipulative, so selfish.

GYPSY

Well, you really think this is all about you, don’t you. Do you have any idea what I’ve been through in the past six months? Do you think I’ve enjoyed keeping this from you? What it’s like for me to watch you and Dani just being so in love and so happy and then I’m all alone just watching you guys from the sidelines keeping this secret from you.

WILL

Keeping me in the dark about one of the most important things that has ever happened to me and you took away my right to know.

GYPSY

What would you have done about it? Look, we can pretend this conversation never happened. Nobody needs to know you’re the father.

WILL

Do you think I’m going to turn away from my own child?

GYPSY

I don’t see what choice you have? You tell your family, your friends, Dani. Say goodbye to it Will. Say goodbye to everything that makes you happy.

WILL

Don’t tell me what my choices are Gyps. It’s bad enough I haven’t known this long. You seriously don’t think I’m going to ignore my own kid.

GYPSY

Look, you’ll do what you have to like I did OK.

WILL

Don’t say we’re the same. We’ve never been the same.

GYPSY

Well we’ve got something in common now and we will have for the rest of our lives.

WILL

I’m going to get out of here.

WILL leaves. On another part of the beach SALLY sits and cries.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE, DANI and NICK are there.

DANI

Gas is off.

IRENE

Oh, good girl. Nick, have you turned the hot water off?

NICK

Yes.

IRENE

Oh, my god, will you look at the time.

DANI

Has Will even packed?

IRENE

No. I tell you that boys been away with the pixies for the last few.

WILL walks in.

IRENE

Finally, where in blue blazers have you been?

WILL

Hi. I was down at the boat. I had things to do.

IRENE

Well mate, you’re about miss this boat if you don’t get your bum into gear and go in there and pack.

DANI

I’ll help.

DANI and WILL go into WILL’S bedroom. NOAH and HAYLEY come down the stairs.

NOAH

Man, you’ve got a lot of stuff.

HAYLEY

Don’t you start.

NOAH

Me as well.

HAYLEY

There are a lot of functions we have to go to.

NOAH

Yeah, well you’re going to have an awesome time.

HAYLEY

Yeah, I hope so.

NOAH

Well I guess this is it.

HAYLEY

Yeah, thanks for helping.

NOAH

No worries.

They cuddle.

NOAH

I liked that.

HAYLEY

Yeah.

The phone rings.

HAYLEY

I’ll get it.

WILL and DANI are in WILL’S room. They look at the compass.

DANI

If you don’t like it you can take it back.

WILL

No, I love it. I love you Dani.

They cuddle.

DANI

I should give you presents more often.

IRENE comes in.

IRENE

All right. Enough you two. That was Don on the phone. He’s already at the station.

WILL

All right.

IRENE

Well you better be, because I’m ringing the cab now.

DANI

One more thing, but to read it out to you’re on the way OK.

WILL

Sure. I’ll miss you Dani. I’ll really miss us.

DANI

Me too.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

JADE and DANI are there.

JADE

So, he really liked the present?

DANI

Yeah, he loved it.

JADE

That’s great.

DANI

And I miss him all ready.

JADE

Come on.

DANI

I do. These two weeks are going to be the hardest two weeks of my live.

JADE

You’ll live.

DANI

Barely.

JADE

So, how was Nick?

DANI

Fine.

JADE

Right.

DANI

You’re such an idiot. He asked about you.

JADE

He did. What did he say?

DANI

He wanted to know if you were going to come over and say goodbye.

JADE

Really.

DANI leaves.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

GYPSY walks in and sits at her desk.

THE BEACH HOUSE

NICK and HAYLEY are in the background. WILL gets in the taxi. He has DANI’S note.

NICK

Well we’re finally on our way.

HAYLEY

Yeah, London.

WILL starts to read the note.

DANI

To the most beautiful boy I know and the funniest and the cutest. OK, maybe that’s a bit much. Anyway I wanted to give you something special that will remind you of us no matter how far we are apart.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

GYPSY tries to right on a form. The pens don’t work.

THE BEACH HOUSE

WILL reads DANI’S note in the taxi.

DANI

You’re the love of my life Will Smith and don’t ever forget that. I love you so much. Love always Dani.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

GYPSY tries to right on some forms. The pen doesn’t work. She begins to cry.
