Scripts - Episode 3119

THE SURF CLUB

WILL and SALLY walk along outside the surf club.

WILL

The whole night she was acting a bit funny. She was tense and she was quiet and then she just ran out.

SALLY

Maybe it’s hard for her.

WILL

Meanwhile Andrew’s probably cracking on to some unsuspecting student.

SALLY

Well, he’s off the scene now.

WILL

You know someone should tell that jerk what she’s been going through.

SALLY

No, no, Will you can’t. I mean, I don’t think she wants any contact with him.

WILL

Well, he is the father, he has responsibilities.

SALLY

Gypsy doesn’t want him in her life. Look, we’ve been through all of this before, Will. Just don’t interfere.

WILL

I’m just trying to help.

SALLY

Yeah, I know, but like you said Andrew’s the jerk. The less she has to do with him the better.

WILL

Sal, jerk or no jerk, the major point being, he’s the babies father.

SALLY

What? So she should let him back into her life just because of that.

WILL

No, I wouldn’t let Gypsy go near a sleaze like that in a million years.

SALLY

Well, then what?

WILL

I’m just saying that he should support her someway. She’s doing this whole thing by herself.

SALLY

Will, I know that you’re only trying to help and it’s really sweet, it is, but please just stay out of it. Things are a lot more complicated than you may think.

WILL

What do you mean?

SALLY

I just mean that we should let Gypsy handle things the way she wants to handle them, OK.

SALLY walks away.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

GYPSY and NOAH are in the kitchen

NOAH

You’re a love guru. Have I waited long enough yet?

GYPSY

You’re asking me for relationship advice. You are desperate.

NOAH

Well, can I least tell Hails how I feel or do I have to wait another century?

GYPSY

Patience is a virtue my friend.

NOAH

How much longer do I have to wait?

GYPSY

Look, I told you, it was not cotia, to go after a girl after she’s just came out of a relationship, even if it was Aidan.

NOAH

Yeah, but I don’t have that much time. She’s leaving the country in a couple of days.

GYPSY

Yeah, well she’ll be back.

NOAH

I can’t let her go with out saying anything. I know she’s told me where to go in the pat, but things are different between us now.

GYPSY

OK, Romeo, let her know, but take my advice and take it very, very slowly.

NOAH

Don’t worry, I not going to so far this time.

SHELLEY and FLYNN are in the office.

SHELLEY

Two thousand eight hundred, eight fifty, nine hundred.

FLYNN

And that’s it. All together there is less than three thousand bucks.

SHELLEY

In pledges.

FLYNN

So we have twenty-two thousand to go. This is hopeless.

NOAH and DANI are in the main room.

NOAH

Aw, I’m in the kitchen. How are you doing Dan?

DANI

Aw, I’m getting there. There’s a lot more do out here.

NOAH

Yeah, you’ll have plenty time for that sort of stuff when Will goes.

GYPSY walks out of the kitchen.

DANI

Yeah. Hey, you’re a guy. Tell me what I should get him for a going away present.

GYPSY

He’s going for like two weeks.

DANI

Yeah, but I want to get him something to go away with.

NOAH

Well, why don’t you give him something useful like one of those disposable cameras.

SHELLEY

Or maybe a money-belt for his passport and travellers cheques.

FLYNN

Get him a book for the plane.

DANI

Guys, that is so boring. I want to get him something original, something romantic.

NOAH

Don’t look at me, Gypsy.

GYPSY

And how am I supposed to know? Why am I the romance expert all of a sudden?

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

DANI and SHELLEY walk in. WILL and BRODIE are there.

DANI

Hey, we were just talking about you.

WILL

Thought my ears were getting warm.

DANI

I was just saying to mum that I cannot mention your name around Gypsy without her having a total hissy fit.

SHELLEY

She wasn’t quite that bad.

WILL

Why? What happened?

SHELLEY

Oh, Gypsy was a bit rude to Dani at the drop-in centre.

DANI

She was a total cow.

WILL

She’s been a bit on edge lately. It’s a pregnancy thing, you said yourself, it’s that whole hormone thing.

DANI

Well, I’m beginning to think twice about that excuse. I mean, Leah’s pregnant, but you don’t see her going off the deep end all the time. She’s definitely got a problem with me.

WILL

Yeah, something’s bothering her, that’s for sure.

DANI

Anyway, I don’t want to talk about Gypsy anymore. What do you want to do this afternoon?

WILL

Anything, I don’t mind.

BRODIE

You could always look at the baby photos.

DANI

Thank you, mum found these baby photos and now she’s totally obsessed.

SHELLEY

I just want you to put them into albums.

DANI

Well, I’m not showing Will any of those.

BRODIE

Oh, come on, I bet you they are very cute.

DANI

Subject is closed; I’m not pulling out those photos until you’re well and truly gone.

WILL

Actually, I should go. I’ve got stuff to do.

DANI

But I need to see you as much I can before you go.

WILL and DANI cuddle.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

SALLY and GYPSY are there.

GYPSY

So, what else did he say?

SALLY

Well, he said he was going to contact Andrew. Let him know what a tough time you’ve been having. No, don’t worry. I set him straight.

GYPSY

Yeah, but he can be pretty stubborn.

SALLY

Yeah, and I was pretty firm. I think he got the message.

GYPSY

Can’t believe he spoke to you about that.

SALLY

He’s worried about you Gypsy, and to be honest, so am I.

GYPSY

I’m OK. It’s just it was a bit much having him there at birthing class.

SALLY

Well I’ll make sure I don’t double book in future.

GYPSY

I don’t know what’s wrong with me lately. It’s just I can’t keep it together whenever I’m around him or Dani for that matter.

SALLY

Maybe you need some time out.

GYPSY

Maybe I need to move away. You don’t know who hard it’s been for me, having them in my face all the time. It didn’t bother me before, but now I just can’t stand it.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

DANI and BRODIE sit on the couch looking at the photos.

DANI

Take this one out.

BRODIE

Aw, you were such a chubby bubby.

DANI

Do you see now why I don’t want to show Will these?

BRODIE

Aw, come on they’re very cute.

DANI

That is that word again. Cute is what you say to somebody when you don’t want to hurt their feelings and what is it with all the nappy shots? At least I wear a bikini in that one.

RHYS and SHELLEY are in the kitchen.

SHELLEY

You were a real water baby.

RHYS

Yeah, we practically had to drag you away from the beach.

DANI

Yeah, at least I never sank with all that baby fat.

BRODIE

Come on, you’re not exactly a tub of lard, although you do have a few spare tyres.

DANI

This is not fair. You bag me out, but I can’t bag you out because you’ve got no photos. Bet you weren’t you prize baby.

BRODIE

I have got photos somewhere.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

FLYNN, SHAUNA, SALLY and JUDE sit at a table. ALF serves them.

ALF

What this I hear about you blokes wanting to be rock stars?

FLYNN

Mate, we played a few songs on Alex’s recorder. I say that’s extent of our foray into the music business.

SALLY

So you’re not going to be the next U2 then?

FLYNN

I don’t think anyone’s giving up their day job just yet.

JUDE

We’re just a couple of guys banging out a few tunes.

SALLY

Ah, the modesty.

ALF

Ah, well I’m glad to see it hasn’t gone to your head.

JUDE

Don’t worry Alf; we’re still upstanding citizens of the community. You guys should come along to hear us jam some time?

FLYNN

See Noah that kid’s a bit of rock star in the making.

SHAUNA

Yeah, he’s got the look.

SALLY

I would love to come.

NOAH walks in.

JUDE

Yo, bro, how’s the sound?

NOAH

Ah, all right, but it would be better if we had a decent drum kit.

JUDE

Yeah, right and where are we going to get one of those from.

SALLY

The schools got one.

JUDE

Do you reckon we can borrow it?

SALLY

I don’t see why not.

NOAH

We can record tomorrow. Are you free?

FLYNN

I’ll find time.

JUDE

So are you going to come and watch your mad man make a complete fool of himself? Come on, it’ll be a lot of fun.

SHAUNA

I don’t know.

NOAH

Yeah, you can be our first official groupie.

SHAUNA

I’ll see. I’m kind of busy tomorrow, so.

FLYNN

Get you on a little tambourine.

SALLY

Me.

Everybody around the table laughs

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

SHELLEY, RHYS and DANI are in the kitchen.

SHELLEY

Sweetheart, can I have a word? I know you didn’t mean to, but I think you upset Brodie before. By teasing her about not having any baby photos. She’s very sensitive about that sort of thing.

DANI

I didn’t think.

SHELLEY

Yeah, well, she’s outside if you want to talk to her.

BRODIE and DANI are sitting out on the veranda.

DANI

The last thing I wanted to do was make you feel bad.

BRODIE

I know. I know you didn’t mean to imply it.

DANI

I was always the queen of tact.

BRODIE

I guess sometimes I just, I try to convince myself that I don’t have any family hang-ups, but I guess I do. It’s just sometimes I look at you and the twins and Rhys and Shelley and I just get a bit sad that I don’t have my own family history, you know.

DANI

But you do have your history. I mean you weren’t born at sixteen.

BRODIE

Yeah, but mum got all the stuff from before then.

DANI

Then why don’t you ask for it?

BRODIE

Because she hates me. If she’d let me have it.

DANI

Well there’s only one way to find out.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE is in the kitchen. NOAH walks in.

IRENE

Oh, g’day darl.

NOAH

Hey Irene. Just wondering if I could talk to Hayley.

IRENE

Ah, yeah, she’s right through there blending into the couch if you can see her.

NOAH walks through. HAYLEY sits watching TV.

HAYLEY

Hi.

NOAH

Hey. What are you watching?

HAYLEY

A doco on plastic surgery.

NOAH

Ah, sounds fascinating.

HAYLEY

No, it is.  It’s not really supposed to be about making people look beautiful. It was originally made to help all these people that got burned in the war.

NOAH

Look, I just wanted to see if you’d like to come hear us jam tomorrow morning at the school.

HAYLEY

Ah, birth of a legend.

NOAH

I wish. Some guys having some fun, more like it.

HAYLEY

Yeah, I don’t know. I’ve got heaps to study.

NOAH

Fair enough. You probably wouldn’t be missing much anyway. I’ll let you get back to your doco.

HAYLEY

Noah, I’ll probably need a study break at some stage.

NOAH

You reckon.

HAYLEY

Yes, I’ll see if I can make it

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BRODIE holds the phone. RHYS, SHELLEY and DANI are also there.

BRODIE

I can’t believe I’m doing this.

SHELLEY

I think it’s a very brave thing to do.

BRODIE

What if she doesn’t want to speak to me though.

Mum, yeah.

Hi, it’s me Brodie.

Eh, yeah, OK. Good thanks. How are you?

OK, yeah I was just wondering, em, if it would be OK if I came over and picked up some of my stuff. If you haven’t already thrown it out.

Eh, what?

If you don’t mind.

Yeah, just like baby photos from when I was a kid, my teddy bear, that sort of stuff.

OK, then. I’ll see you then. Bye.

BRODIE hangs up.

DANI

What?

BRODIE

She’s going to bring it over tomorrow.

SHELLEY

Here?

BRODIE

Yeah, yeah, she said she wants to meet you guys. She was being really nice actually.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE carries a washing basket. She knocks on the door of WILL’S room. WILL lies on the bed. IRENE knocks on the door.

IRENE

Are you still asleep in there?

WILL

Yes.

IRENE comes into the room.

IRENE

Talking in your sleep are you. Listen darl, I’m about to whack on a quick load before I scoot off to work for a bit.

WILL

Irene, it’s the weekend.

IRENE

I know that, but we’re going away remember and I’d like to make sure that my desk is clean before we go. Now, have you got anything you want washed before we go on the trip? You know mate, you really should start to get yourself organised. We’ve got a million and one things to do before we go.

WILL

I know.

IRENE

God, you’re a lazy lot you bunch.

A FLASHBACK-SUMMER BAY HIGH

WILL and GYPSY are in the classroom.

WILL

With Gypsy being a single mum she’s going to need as much support from friends as she can, you know, like to baby sit or just for someone to talk to, but asides from that I don’t think it’ll effect me at all.

GYPSY is then seen walking out the classroom.

THE BEACH HOUSE

WILL lies on his bed.

A FLASHBACK-SUMMER BAY HIGH

WILL and VINNIE are in a corridor. GYPSY is around the corner.

WILL

Now, I don’t get that Andrew guy, as if he’d miss out on something as amazing as this.

THE BEACH HOUSE

WILL lies on his bed.

A FLASHBACK-SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

GYPSY, DANI and WILL are there.

GYPSY

You guys just don’t get it, do you? We’re meant to be helping out here.

WILL

We are helping out Gypsy. Calm down.

GYPSY

No, I won’t calm down Will. Didn’t you here anything Flynn said before. We’re trying to do something that matters here, but you two, your just too wrapped up in your own little worlds and too immature to understand that. I think you should leave.

THE BEACH HOUSE

WILL lies in his bed.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BRODIE and DANI sit on the couch. RHYS and SHELLEY are in the kitchen.

SHELLEY

I should be really happy that Brodie’s contact with Jan, but I don’t know.

RHYS

Well, are you frightened it might all blow up in her face?

SHELLEY

Yeah, well, let’s face it. Every time she has anything to do with her family she ends up getting hurt.

RHYS

Yeah, well, at least this time, you know, it’s all on Brodie’s territory. She might think twice before stepping out of line.

There is knock on the door. SHELLEY answers it. It is JAN, BRODIE’S mother.

SHELLEY

Hi, you must be Jan.

JAN

And you must be the Sutherland’s.

RHYS

G’day, I’m Rhys, this is Shelley.

SHELLEY

Hi.

BRODIE walks up to JAN.

BRODIE

Hi mum.

JAN

Sweetheart, come here.

BRODIE and JAN cuddle.

JAN

Look at you, all sophisticated and grown up.

BRODIE

This is Dani.

DANI

Hi.

JAN

Nice to meet you. First things first, some photos and some other things. It’s so nice to meet the people who are being so good to my daughter. Now, I could kill for a cup of tea.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

JUDE, NOAH and FLYNN are at their instruments. SALLY and HAYLEY sit on a table.

JUDE

Well, did she say if she would be coming by later.

HAYLEY

No, she said she had heaps to do at the drop-in centre.

NOAH

Enough about Shauna. Lets rehearse my song.

FLYNN

What? Your song?

NOAH

Well I changed it didn’t I.

JUDE

Ah, right, I think we’ve got someone here developing a star complex.

FLYNN

You get one in every band, don’t you?

JUDE

Yeah, and do you realise you’d be nowhere without us.

NOAH

Bro, I am nowhere and it’s because of you two losers.

JUDE

He plays dirty.

FLYNN

The boy has got attitude. What are we going to do with him?

NOAH

I don’t know. Shut up, play.

HAYLEY

They’re such show-offs.

SALLY

Yeah and they haven’t even started playing yet.

JUDE

Ready, one, two.

The band starts to play.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

JAN, BRODIE, DANI, RHYS and SHELLEY sit around the table.

JAN

So when Gary left I thought that’s it. I’ve got to let that man ruin whatever life I’ve got left so I decided to go back into the workforce. I was a bit nervous at first, but to tell you the truth it’s so nice to be independent for a change.

SHELLEY

So, where is it that you work?

JAN

Oh, down at the Supermart. It’s not far from my house. Stock shelves, sometimes work the till. It’s a living.

RHYS

Good for you.

JAN

So, how are you going at school then?

BRODIE

OK.

SHELLEY

Don’t be so modest Brodie. She’s doing very well.

DANI

Yeah, she’s really good at history and she’s really good at geography.

JAN

I don’t remember you being good at those sort of things, but then again I always did say you were smart. You just never applied yourself, that’s all. See when it’s comes to Brodie it’s always a matter of discipline. When she puts her mind to it she can to do just about anything.

RHYS

Well, we’re really proud of her.

BRODIE

Do you want to go for a walk?

JAN

I haven’t finished tea yet sweetheart.

BRODIE

Oh, it’s just its nice now and it’ll get windy later.

JAN

Well, if Rhys and Shelley don’t mind.

SHELLEY

No, we’re fine. You do whatever you want.

BRODIE

Em, well we could go to the beach. It’s really nice there.

JAN

Sure.

THE BEACH

BRODIE and JAN walk along.

JAN

So, are you going to talk to your mother or bring her down here to give me the cold shoulder?

BRODIE

Sorry.

JAN

It’s been a long time. Too long. So tell me about yourself. You got a boyfriend?

BRODIE

No.

JAN

Oh, just as well. Better of without them I say. Men, you can’t be relying on them for anything.

BRODIE

Is Gary really gone?

JAN

I certainly hope so. Glad never to see his sorry face ever again.

BRODIE

I thought you guys got on.

JAN

He was half the reason things messed up between you and me. I mean, he wouldn’t even let me come to see you in the hospital when you had your accident.

BRODIE

You wanted to come?

JAN

Of course I did. I was worried sick out of my mind, but he wouldn’t let me leave the house. I reckon he was jealous. I mean jealous I actually cared for someone else other than him. Look, I know it might sound like I’m making excuses, but you don’t know what it was like to live with him. I mean I was scared to scratch my head in case I made him angry.

BRODIE

I didn’t know.

JAN

You didn’t know half of it, but that’s all behind us now. With him out of the way we can start all over again. You know, I was so happy when you rang me yesterday. I was hoping you’d do that for such a long time.

BRODIE

You could have called me, mum?

JAN

Well, thought you didn’t want a bar of me. I understand. I know I am not mother of the year material, but I hope you give me a chance. I want to make things right between us. I really do.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

WILL walks in. SHAUNA is there.

SHAUNA

Aw, Will. What brings you here?

WILL

I’m looking for Gypsy. Is she around?

SHAUNA

No, she just popped out to get some chocolate. I suppose that’s the up-side 0f being pregnant. You can chew away things like that.

WILL

You don’t mind if I wait around for her, do you?

SHAUNA

No, of course not. Not long you.

WILL

What?

SHAUNA

Until the, you know, holiday. You getting excited?

WILL

I guess.

SHAUNA

Some of us would give right arm to spend a couple of weeks in London.

WILL

Maybe.

SHAUNA

I made some tea. Would you like something? A coffee.

WILL

No, look, I’m just going to leave a note. Is that all right?

SHAUNA

Sure. Are you OK?

WILL

Yeah, I’m just tired.

WILL goes into a drawer and finds an old picture of himself and GYPSY.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

JUDE, FLYNN and NOAH are playing the instruments. SALLY and HAYLEY are there. IRENE walks in to the classroom.

IRENE

I thought I heard a racket down here.

SALLY

Aw, sorry Irene. We didn’t know anyone else was around.

IRENE

Ah, they’re not too bad.

They stop playing.

SALLY

That was great guys.

HAYLEY

Yeah. Well done.

NOAH

It’s just not right.

JUDE

Man, your voice. It’s way too grungy. It’s too harsh.

NOAH

Needs to be more bluesy then.

JUDE

Yeah.

NOAH

Why don’t you have a go?

FLYNN

No, no, no this is supposed to be fun. My singing voice is not fun.

JUDE

Ditto for me.

HAYLEY

Well, Irene can sing.

IRENE

No, you don’t. No, you don’t. I’m strictly karaoke, thank you.

HAYLEY

So, branch out a little.

IRENE

No offence to the boys, but it’s is not my music.

FLYNN

Sally.

SALLY

No, I only sing in the shower.

JUDE

But can you hold a tune?

SALLY

Well I suppose I could try.

Everybody claps as SALLY gets up to the microphone.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

DANI and BRODIE are in the kitchen. RHYS and SHELLEY are in the kitchen.

DANI

Did you ask her why she didn’t come to visit you in the hospital?

BRODIE

Ah, yeah. She blames Gary for that.

DANI

What? How does that work?

SHELLEY

Dani.

BRODIE

It doesn’t matter. I don’t believe her anyway.

The phone rings.

RHYS

I’ll get it.

BRODIE

She seems to think that everything is just going to be OK between us now.

SHELLEY

What do you think?

BRODIE

I don’t know. It’s not like I can just forget the stuff that’s happened and anyway we don’t really have that much in common anyway.

RHYS walks in with the phone.

RHYS

Excuse me Brods. It’s your mum.

BRODIE

Hi mum.

Ah yeah. I suppose that would be OK.

No, next Tuesday I can’t.

Wednesday, yeah, yeah, OK.

Ah, I’ll see you then.

BRODIE hangs up.

DANI

And?

BRODIE

Em, she wants to go shopping next Wednesday.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

HAYLEY, IRENE, JUDE, SALLY, FLYNN and NOAH are all in the classroom.

SALLY

If you promise not to laugh.

HAYLEY

You’ll be great. You’re heaps better than me.

NOAH

Are you ready?

SALLY

Yeah, tell me when to come in.

NOAH

Hey, no problems. One, two, three, four.

The band starts to play and then SALLY starts to sing.

SALLY

You come say what you want and I might listen. You don’t know what you’ve got. I shake hands and listen. Because I am, tell you lies. You don’t know what you’ve got; you don’t know what you’ve till it’s gone.

THE SURF CLUB

WILL sits on a fence.

A FLASHBACK-THE BEACH HOUSE

GYPSY and WILL are on the patio.

GYPSY

You’re the father. I mean, you’ve always suspected it, haven’t you?

THE SURF CLUB

WILL sits on a fence.

A FLASHBACK-THE BEACH HOUSE

GYPSY and WILL are on the patio.

GYPSY

Relax, I’m kidding.

THE SURF CLUB

WILL gets up and walks away.
