Greg Benson

Played Matt Wilson

Perhaps part of Greg Benson's appeal is his unpretentious upbringing in a small town not unlike Summer Bay, Umina on the New South Wales coast.

Greg attended school in Dorrigo, Coffs Harbour. His earlier ambitions were to become a policeman like his father or a lawyer. In the event, his sister who was modelling, encouraged him to do the same and he went onto the books of Chadwicks in Sydney. Greg then worked on campaigns for McDonalds, Coke, Pepsi and Wrigley, at the age of 14.

Unfortunately, there was not always enough work for Greg so he also worked part time as a waiter. His big break finally came in the form of a Levi's 501 ad. Levi's wanted a Nick Kamen lookalike and to follow the British ad, stripping down to his boxer shorts in a laundromat.

Although Greg's colouring was totally different, they were totally impressed with his charisma, they simply dyed his hair, darkened his skin, added a beauty spot and Greg was made.

Univision spotted Greg and he then became a major item in Australia. His career in TV was assured and he then entered the record business.
